Hey guys, my question to you is do you prefer the vintage style 3-saddle bridges or the modern 6-saddle bridges? Also, what do you feel are the pros and cons of each? I've been doing a little planning as far as the build i'm going to be undertaking this coming year, and although I like the look of the vintage bridges, I like to be able to adjust my intonation for each string individually, so I'm not really sure which way I'm going to go yet. Opinions?

I have a 52 reissue Tele with the 3 saddles and I have a 1983 tele with 6 saddles, Intonnation is easier with this last one for sure. Almost impossible to be perfect with the 3 saddles
Yes me too I like the 3 vintage brass saddles, but 6 modern saddle works better. Go with 6.

I use Glendale "Intone Cutting Edge" Compensated Saddles. They give you that vintage look while putting an end to the intonation issues that you usually have with traditional vintage saddles. I can't recommend these enough for anyone looking for the ultimate vintage style saddle for their Tele but wanting to get perfect intonation. ALL of the Glendale parts are top notch.

In my experience, sound and playability is more important than looks. The six saddle would be better, but those glendales sound pretty good but I don't know much about them.

Hi,

I have a Vintage Advance AV2 Boulevade http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintageadvance.html and it comes fitted with a Wilkinson compensated bridge and that setup seems to work pretty well. I may be wrong but I think that it will always be a bit of a compromise getting the intonation perfect on the selected pair of strings. I think it's still easier to get things set up with the six seperate saddles.

These Wilkinson ones are available as a replacement/upgrade so should be a direct fit.

Here is a picture of it on my AV2 guitar in a little more detail

Good luck

i dont know that much about the wilkinson vintage style saddles but first ting i see is that they dont touch at the ends and that is what gives the edge to the Glendale saddles, they are designed to touch at the ends and that is what increases the intonation of those versus other vintage style saddles.

Hi TimDrakeMusic,

The three saddle bridge has the vintage looks, but it is impossible to get the intonation correct. I really prefer the look of a modern six saddle bridge, and the intonation is much better too. Callaham offers "slant compensated" three saddle bridge pieces, which have a slanted mounting for proper intonation, and "enhanced vintage compensated" saddles that are beveled instead of slanted, either kind in brass or stainless steel. So, with these options, you could have the best of both worlds. :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I had heard of compensated saddles, but that hadn't crossed my mind. I think I'm going to go that route, the 3-saddle bridge is just such a classic tele piece that I really think I want one for this build. And I do still have the Blackout Tele which has the six-saddle bridge.
What would be the difference between the brass and stainless saddles? Any differences tone-wise?

Thanks for the interesting thread. I bought my first tele last week. It is a Classic Player Baja. Although I have never dealt with a 3 saddle bridge before I did realize that intonation might be a problem. Is intonation a reoccurring problem? How often does it need checking beyond the normal "something doesn't sound right"? I love the guitar and the tone and want to keep it.

Once set, the intonation will remain the same and won't need further adjustment unless you change strings to a vastly different gauge or brand. :)
