I'm pretty new to this telecaster business but am looking to get one. I have played several different styles. I really seem drawn to the 52 hot rod with the mini humbucker, but can't quite muster the $1700 to get one. (A little, out of my price range.)

But I have seen several comments in various post about getting a MIM standard and having a seymour duncan mini hum installed.

My questions are:

Is the MIM standard already routed for a mini hum in the neck position?

If so, which of the SD mini hums is closest to the one in the 52 hot rod?

And how hard is it to install the mini hum in place of the single coil? Do you just get a replacement pickguard for a 52 reissue and splice the mini hum into the wiring harness of the standard MIM?

Any help would be apprechiated.

im not sure about that, although I can say that if you are looking for a tele with humbuckers, bear in mind the blacktops, blackdove tele, and 72 tele's

For humbucking, the DiMarzio Area T's are hard to beat.

I can speak from experience. The MIM standards are indeed routed for a full size humbucker under the pick guard. I got an aftermarket (Allparts) HB routed pg and installed a Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II into the neck position of my MIM. Really, you only need to desolder and resolder two wires to accomplish the job. The whole thing fits wonderfully. Definitely changes the possibilities and character of the guitar.

I put Samariums (apparently now discontinued) in my MIM after I got it in October and they fit with no problem at all. It is a great combination sound wise. I'm about to put a 4 way in it and have decided to go with 500k audio pots and change the cap to .022. If you find a MIM that feels good to you, buy it. I love mine.

I'm pretty sure the humbucker in the Hot Rod is the Vintage Mini-Humbucker, the SM-1. So long as you have enough space in the routing and the proper pickguard installation should be pretty straightforward as far as swapping pickups goes. As long as you get a good MIM that has a nice vintage-style tele bridge PU the MIM strategy should give you the desired sounds, long as you can live without a tweed case, nitro finish and an American sticker ^^

Thanks everyone for the information. I had read or seen where the MIM's were routed for humbuckers but don't have the opportunity to check it out myself. I had looked at the allpart site and found I could order the pickguard routed for the mini hum. All I needed was confirmation that the MIM's were routed by someone that had one and had checked it.

As for living without the tweed case and the nitro finish and the american sticker, I can. Or my wife would be killing me. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have the "orginal" reissue but by saving over a grand and being a new player I think I can live with the differences.

Again thanks a lot.
