I just wasted 10 minutes of my life!!!!! I followed some of the links. Do people today even know how to play guitar? Everything I heard was completely laughable, tonewise(or lack of) and talentwise(serious lack of)......1234...1234...1234....1234....all downstrokes and what sounded like a ripped speaker with a blanket over it....Overdrive pedals are meant to do just that, OVERDRIVE an already cranked up tube amp. Turn the gain down, volume up and just slightly dial in a LITTLE extra gain.

I totally agree. So many times I go to Guitar Center and hear younger players saturate their sound with crunchy distortion. They blare their sound way too loud and butcher their favorite music. I'm convinced that they don't really listen to and learn the songs their playing. For those who use TAB: It teaches where the notes are and how to play them, but you need to hear it. There are subtle nuances that are in a song that you can't get from TAB. If I have to hear another tortured classic rock song lick I’m going to vomit.

This is what I see when I go to Guitar Center:
1. Guy picks up a guitar, usually with HBs. Single coil pups would make their bad play very obvious.
2. Doesn't tune the guitar up.
3. Cranks up volume and gain.
4. Tortures the rest of us.

My advice to young players:
1. Tune the guitar.
2. Play the guitar unplugged.
3. Play the guitar through the clean channel.
4. Go to the dirty channel at low volume.

I realize that it's all a matter of taste, but shotty play is shotty playing.

Fulltone OCD's are nice but i feel like they're hyped up just a little. I love my OCD on hp mode with a tube sceamer or Boss OD-3 after it. But the OCD just by itself seems to work well for rhythm distortion but not so much for lead tones. Seriously though, one of the most overlooked pedals ever is the Boss OD-3. only ~80 bucks and has remained my favorite after the many overdrive pedals I've tried, some of which cost at least twice as much. Has an amazingly full, rich, transparent sound. to me it sounds like a Tube screamer but with more low end response. Mind you it does not have the FET circuitry that makes it "behave like a tube amp" in terms of strumming lightly makes it sound clean. But that is one thing I like about it. It has just the perfect amount of compression for smooth, sustainy, overdriven leads. Kicking the OCD on before it in the chain adds some hair and fuzziness to it which nails those screaming tele bridge pu tones.

One I want to try is the Tech21/SansAmp "Blond" pedal. I heard some clips and it sounds pretty versatile. If you have one give a review if you can.

nice pedal but the new paisley drive smokes just about anything on the market
at this point.

the OCD is a great pedal. hyped up, nope not enough.
the thing is, the OCD isnt good for just any ole amp. i mean sure it works on every amp but it damn sure dont work its magic on every amp.
take my egnator rebel20 for example. the OCD just doesnt work on this amp.
ive tried it every which way. honestly, you dont need a distortion or OD pedal for that amp. of all the pedals i own the OCD makes my Blues jr and my pignose sing like no other amp. its amazing lol. imo the only pedal that comes close to the OCD is the paisley drive. that pedal is amazing. from smooth cool OD tones to full on distortion, that pedal has it all in one box. this guy does a good job at demoing the PD pedal

I use an old TS7 and front load it with a compressor ...about as "adjustable" as anyone can ask for from subtle overdrive to ear-bleeding screaming and feedback laced frenzy....more fun than oughta be legal!

I'll always keep my trusty old TS9 but I have considered getting an Ego comp and the Paisley drive to freshen up the board a little

both exceptional choices. you cant go wrong there. i want a PD myself, its the only pedal out there that gives the OCD a run for its money imo.

If you're not into heavy overdrive, there's the "Bit O'Honey" OD. It's a light, Vintage twin type OD, made by Daniel Zink, inspired by the BJFE Honey Bee. It's a creamy low gain OD thats pleasant on the ears.

I also use an OCD which is first in line, and provides more headroom and presence.
The Screamer occasionally combines very well with the OCD, and is great on its own.

Check out the Green Screamer demo shootout by the demo king, "Gearmandude" (who BTW, is NOT Jack Black):

That's why I would use a screamer after an OCD, Way Cool Jr.
Thank you Rossfloss!!

i still dont get why it takes 2 pedals to get the OD tone.
just buy one pedal that does it for ya. saves $$ and space on the board.

An OCD in "HP" mode and a tube screamer have two completely different overdrive tones that can be used separately or in combination. What is it that don't you get, Rock Star?????? I don't use a million pedals, so I don't have a board space problem. My only other pedal is an analogue delay. If you only want to use one overdrive pedal, be my guest.

I only need one overdrive, where as I have multiple delays and reverbs, as well as a volume pedal, compression sustainer, wah, tremolo and an octave. My pedal board is not lacking for space either. If I need more space I'll go to my welding shop and make another, (sure it's heavier but I save $125). It's all about the style of music you play, some people don't need multiple overdrives. What is is that you don't get, Rock Star?????
