I recently bought a 1998 Nashville in beautiful condition. Natural finish Ash body with tortoiseshell binding and pickguard, 3 noiseless p/u, with mini-toggle complimenting the 5-way strat style switch. Rosewood fretboard with medium jumbo frets. This plays really nice and smooth with great action. Sound is wonderful on the Hot Rod Deluxe.
It's made in Corona, and I believe it's the American deluxe series (it's scalloped on the back of body - like a strat. - but I'd like to find out more about it as far as background, like why the mini-toggle? Why was it made for only one year?
Also, what is the most reliable way to make a serial number search?
Cheers- Chris.

It sounds like an American Deluxe Tele to me - it would be nice to see some photos of it. I didn't remember those being in natural ash back then; they did have a teal finish and a blonde finish (kind of a see-through red).

It is possible that it could be a tail-end Tele Plus; the last version of them had the top bound body and Strat-type back route but they would have Lace Sensors instead of Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups.

At any rate, the American Deluxes came out about March 1998; the original Tele model did have the middle pickup and the mini toggle. The mini-toggle was to combine the neck and middle pickups to get that traditional Tele "both pickups" sound in positions 1 and 5 on the 5-way switch (which works like a Strat 5-way switch). I think it might give you all 3 pickups on in positions 2 and 4 as well. As far as I remember the American Deluxe changed back to 2 pickups in 1999, but I'm not sure if that occurred at the beginning of the year or in the middle of the year. The longest the 3 pickup American Deluxe could have been made was about 16 months.

Thanks for posting the photo link. It certainly looks like an American Deluxe Tele from 1998 (assuming the serial number starts with DN8). I suspect it was originally a white blonde finish since those had the tortoise shell binding but the body looks like it was stripped and refinished natural to me (they didn't offer a natural finish in that year). I think that the string tree has been replaced; I thought these came with a modern roller string tree instead of the vintage-style round tree.

Thanks very much for the background John C!
The S/N does start with DN8. It's interesting to find out that the body has possibly been refinished. If anything was done, it was certainly done by a professional. I suppose the Noiseless pickups were also added. I've only had this for about a month and I've already had two pro players show a big interest. - But I'm keeping this one!

After I posted this I did have a thought - it could have been a special run in natural for a large dealer (like Guitar Center). As you say if it wasn't a special run then whomever did the refinish did a very nice job on it.
