I recently had the bridge pickup in my '72 thinline reissue go out on me.

So I have the opportunity to either replace it or upgrade it with something new.

Any thoughts? Are people happy with the stock pickups or are there better ones out there?

I like the stock pickups sound, but sometimes being satisfied with 'good' prevents finding 'best', if you know what I mean.

I like the stock pickups, but I have MIJ/CIJ '72 Thinline RIs, and they seem to be a little hotter to me than the Mexico built ones. An article on the 'Full Range' pickups I found on Wikipedia says the Japan ones have Ceramic magnets, where the Mexico ones use Alnico.

If you switch to 'standard' humbuckers, you will need a new pickguard as the stock pickups are a bit bigger plus they're mounted differently. Also, the pole spacing on the bridge pickup is wider than the neck pickup (that's how Fenders are due to the string spacing at the bridge), and a 'standard' humbucker won't have the poles exactly under the strings at the bridge location. I think Seymour Duncan offers humbuckers with Fender bridge spacing, perhaps others do too.

hmm..that seems more complicated than I'm willing to get into. I think I'll stick with stock. Thanks for the info!

I'm new to these forum and relatively new to guitar talk. Can you describe 'hotter' a bit?

Generally speaking for me, that means a little higher output. There are advantages to both, depending on your style of playing and your amp setup.

Unbelievable! I had the same thing happen to the same pickup on my 72 reissue! The neck position measures 8.5K, but the bridge is 270K and is almost dead. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, has anyone found a replacement, besides a stock pickup, that can be installed without any mods?

Don't freak out. Had mine fixed for around $40. I wish I didn't have to have a relatively new guitar fixed, but it didnt break the bank for me.

I did see pickups from Rio Grande that will work without doing any mods. They are a little more expensive than a stock replacement. I don't see any hope for the original unless I get it rewound or try it myself. It still works but has an extremely low output

I have the same guitar too, in natural, havent had any pickup problems, I rarely use the bridge pickup alone. :P

I'm thinking about an ashtray to go on the hardtail bridge for this guitar, and also a black pickgaurd, what do you guys think???
