This is a USA Tele with an "N4" SN. It's black with white or cream binding. Is this just a standard with an unusual color scheme or something else? Thanks.

Hi zen cohen,

That doesn't look like a Standard, maybe a Deluxe just going by the block bridge saddles. I am not sure if the bridge and body are Fender or not. Maybe someone here knows when Fender started stamping the bridge plate, I know that the newer ones are stamped "Fender" between the pickup and saddles. You can contact Fender with the full serial number and they can give you details about it.

Thanks for the response. I called Fender and the SN is not in their database, so that's out. The body looks like a Deluxe but it doesn't have a contoured back like some Deluxes I've seen. It didn't occur to me that it may not be authentic Fender.

I remember a response here recently, apparently they didn't start the contour heel until....(2002?), at least I don't think they had the contour in 94. If you can get a look at the neck pocket, and neck heel, with the neck removed and under the pick guard for any markings might help identify it better. To me, the bridge plate looks like a replacement, maybe Fender, maybe another brand. Of course more than the one picture would be helpful too. :)

No double bound body American Standard Teles back then. The bridge plate and saddles look right for the era. It could be just a replacement body or the body from Tele Custom with the neck and hardware of an American Standard.

Regarding the serial number - is it that the serial number is not in Fender's database or is it that Fender's database doesn't go back that far? It seems to me that for some reason their records were destroyed instead of being transferred to their current computer system.

Strat Plus models had binding on the top and the Strat-type back bevel from 1996-1997; that was carried forward to the American Deluxes in 1998. They got the beveled neck plate in 2004.

More photos would be helpful.

Thanks for the info John C, you're the man! :)

Fender told me that their data base goes back to 93, and not all of 93, so 94 should be covered, but it's close to the cutoff. I would be interested also in whether it just wasn't in the data base, or what.

Thank you both. I think Fender said the SN didn't come up in its DB.

I'm trying to picture the headstock front showing the decal, and back showing the serial number, etc.... But seriously, more pictures could reveal more details. The serial number should show up in the data base if it is genuine, although it's possible that it was just an oversight in record keeping that it didn't show up. But I think that they would have told you if it was the case that the records didn't go back that far.
