i was thinking about buying a fender mex tele sometime in the future and wanted your opinions and pictures of them as compared to the SLIGHTLY more expensive highway one. I want to to know if it is worth the extra money and what the differences are. Thanks! :D

Hi,

Now i know an awful lot of people will disagree with me but i can't stand this guitar. On paper, it looks perfect for me, however when i sat down and tried it, nothing worked for me, so I went for the MIM and used the extra money to mod. Having said that, please dont take my opinion, get to the shop and try for yourself, thats only way you can say for sure :)

Played both, along with several other models, and decided on the Hwy1 with the nitro honey blonde finish.

GC has a FSR ash body MIM standard Tele thar sounded okay, but not the sound I was looking for.

The Baja has a great sound and the Western and Nashville were good too.

The sound of the Hiway1 just wasn't for me.
But don't let others decide. Go play them yourself. :)

I didn't like the hot bridge pup (alnicoIII) but the neck was okay, however the BL Keystones are what sealed the deal for me.

Out of curiosity, what do you plan on playing (i.e. genre, band, etc.). Both are really close, but if you don't love one or the other more, just go with the Standard.

I tried both, went w/ Highway One, because of Nitro Finish, Greasebucket, and edgier sound. It was really tough though, because I really like the MIM Standards...but an edgier sound is what I needed and the Nitro Finish really looks great (especially after awhile, the finish gets shiny where your arm rests and what not).

keep in mind I already have an epiphone dot, so I don't use it for everything. I mainly use my current telecaster (a nice squier) for stuff like radiohead, john mayer, some bluesy improvs, a few led zeppelin songs, red hot chili peppers, etc. stuff like that. I hope that helps, which would be more fitting for those styles?

I like my Hwy 1. The fret wires on guitars MIM have rough edges and that bothers me. I`ve had about 4 guitars MIM, Strats and Teles and sold all of them because of it. For the extra money I`d rather buy one MIA.

I haven't actually played it but for a hundred bucks more than the HWY1 you can get the baja

Like I said, I haven't played it but what I've heard of it sounds awesome and intriguing. Seems like a good value; if I ever get a tele this will probably be it.

I have both MIM Standards and a HWY 1. I will tell you that I love both types. My HWY 1 is great for cutting through the mix when I am playing lead. It is razor sharp and when I go to the neck pup...bell like tones which are so smooth it is not funny. My MIMs are all exceptional guitars...fantastic fit, finish and sound. They are perfect for my style and tone. I say try both and buy the one that speaks to you.

If you like playing with a lot of distortion get the HW1. The pickups handle distortion so well its like they are hybrids between humbuckers and single coils. They say its because of the overwound, darker ALNICO III magnets. The flipside is some people say the clean tones arent the best, but to me they are great too.

I can say enough good things about the HW1 Tele. Incredible value, excellent fit and finish and killer tone 8)

I don't like the tone of the hot pickups.

I don't like the HUGE frets.

I have an '06 MIM Midnight Wine Tele with a maple neck and it's just a superb guitar as is.Many will automatically say that MIM Fenders need a pickup swap but that's just an unnecessary expense as the newer MIMs have great electronics compared to those of the '90s yet people still wrongly insist that there's something inferior about them.Granted the MIM pups may not have as powerful an output as an MIA but a simple tweak of your volume control has that one little issue covered as they have the unmistakeable Tele tone-and that's what really matters.

Pickups are an easy swap, find one that feels good and you really like the neck profile, frets and radius on.
