I've recently bought a mim standard telecaster and customized everything to make it look vintage; tuning nobs, 3 saddle bridge etc. My last part of my guitar is to get that nice vintage gloss they had in the 50s tele necks but I'm too afraid that I might ruin the neck if I sand it down and do the job myself. Any suggestions or places I can take it to to get this procedure done?

Changing the bridge and the tuners are fairly inexpensive and reasonably easy mods (even with having to do some drilling and bushing replacement); when you get into trying to strip the neck and refinish it you might do just as well to get a replacement neck that already has a gloss finish.

I'm barely qualified to do more than change strings, but I've heard from those who have done refinishes that stripping the polyester finish from an MIM is pretty difficult and time consuming. Plus you will destroy the headstock decal/serial number in the process and you would have to jump through a lot of hoops to get replacements (if Fender will even sell you replacements).

Hey mate,

A guy by the name of Kozy on the Strat Forums tinted his neck to give it a vintage feel. if you look at this thread

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... &start=180

You have to go back to one of the first pages on the thread to see what the neck looked like untinted. Maybe if you contact him he might give you some insight into how to get that worn look.

Dan

True, but the OP wanted a gloss finish. Don't most of the tinting agents still leave it satin, or do they gloss it up?

no it more or less just yellows up whats there. he said something about sanding down his neck. i assume its already glossy.
when i think vintage im thinking yellowish/tan sorta thing.
the stain just darkens the gloss by tinting it. it doesnt take away the
shine so much as it sounds.

Sorry guys, was kinda uncleare, do to my drunkin typing. Any who, my neck is glossed all ready, kinda like the generic gloss that most mims look like. the tint is a dark yellow but its not Nitrocellulose Lacquer like the vintage necks that the MIAs have. I've checked out this site called reranch guitar, which has paint supplies for guitars and it mention sanding down the old gloss to put the new one in. I'm just to much a chicken sh*t to do it myself!!! Any suggestions guys

Unless you have a buddy who has a woodworking shop and too much time on his hands, just get a replacement neck. A hundred dollars or thereabouts will get you where you want to go.

Going deep-down bargain: some of the 80's/90's Squier necks had that same gloss. The only problem with those is that the fretwork is shoddy... you'd need to hammer down one or two and bevel the edges. If you can get one for next to free, the cost of the work would be a bargain. Another potential upside is that those necks were generally made to be slim and fast (if that's your thing... I prefer the baseball bat radius personally).

Otherwise, just get something from Ebay (keep yours as a backup or sell it). You can find anything there.
