I purchased this guitar the other day
I may have paid too much but im not sure $600?
I knew I had to have it once i picked it up
I have heard the quality of the MIJ guitars was very good
I do know it is a 85/86 based on the serial number on the bridge plate

from what I can tell it is 100% original

serial number is A073287

the neck says Made in Japan

this is what guitar dater says

Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan
in the Year(s): 1985 - 1986

I agree, very nice. If it sounds as good as it looks, I'd say it's a keeper.

Based on the double binding, I'd say that it's a '62 Reiisue Tele. Nice flame bookmatching though, so I don't know if it's a special model or not.

Let me know if you ever want to sell it....

I took the neck off and this is what it says

TLC-62B on the neck
C - 62B /GF on the neck cavity
anyone know what these codes mean ?
part of it I gather means its a 62 re issue with a binding re 62B
there is also a red stamp in the cavity a circle (with an S)

It's definitely a Japan '62 Tele Custom variant (the bound body and the rosewood fretboard is a dead giveaway, even though it doesn't say 'Custom' on the headstock-most didn't), but I don't recall seeing them with a flame maple front and back-but it's entirely possible AND likely!

I would think that the front and back is maple veneer (probably not 'foto flame') with a basswood body, but that's just a guess from seeing the neck pocket photo (the wood doesn't match the front and back of the body). MIJ Fenders used basswood for many of their FujiGen-built guitars (pre 1996).

It's a really nice Tele-and gives me yet another reason to wish that Fender put out a Fender Japan book!

I have just taken the pickguard and control plate off

how can one tell if its a foto or a maple cap, how thick would it be if its a
cap? based on what I see it could be either

the guitar seems to be have sprayed with a clear coat the goes into the control plate cavity half way
I have pictures of that as well that I will post

Flame maple grain will 'shift' when viewed in different angles of light, looking almost three dimensional. 'Foto Flame' won't, since it's basically a printed transfer. Fender Japan used the 'Foto Flame' process on necks, too-which is why I think yours has maple veneer.

As far as how thick it is, you can check in the neck pocket-but it's tough to tell due to the sunburst coloring (especially if there is overspray), unless it's really obvious. Veneers get used a lot on imports anymore, it's an easy way to get the most out of a piece of flame maple. Hope this helps!

I am not saying that the body is a fake, but the string thru body holes are not perfectly straight, from what I see. If it was made in a factory they would be perfectly in line. Could be just the angle of the picture!

I'd suggest you make sure that you keep the original bits somewhere (and don't lose them!) because modifying your guitar will actually have decreased it's value should you ever want to sell it later to a collector. If you put it back to original (professionally of course) it will be worth more when you want to sell it IMHO.
