I have a Telecoustic that was manufactured in Japan circa late 80's or early 90's. (Serial # M021731). I've had it for almost two decades and it has served me well.

I'd like to find out additional information about this guitar as it is rather different from the Telecoustics I always see online or in music stores.

The common version (at least from my experience) is a guitar with a plastic body/maple top and appearance similar to its electric cousin. It is strung through a uniform looking bridge (sort of an oblong or half circle appearance) on the front of the guitar.

Mine doesn't have the pronounced cutaway or the plastic body. It's a maple body front and back and has a mahogany fret board. It is strung through the back of the body and has an arrow-shaped bridge.

From time-to-time I search online to see if I can find an axe similar to what I currently own and/or find information about the guitar but all I ever come across about the Telecoustic is what I've referred to as the common version.

Questions:
What is the background on this guitar? How did it come to be? Does it have a name beyond what is on the headstock? How long were the Telecoustic's like mine manufactured? How many were manufactured? Is the single-coil pickup (which is hidden) near the bridge or the fret board? Why did Fender decide to change it's body style and appearance? (poor sales?, manufacturing issues? etc.?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

hi clewis,

your telecoustic is based on the original model, created by john page of the custom shop. it started life in ca. 1991 as a cs model and a few years later it was produced in japan. the custom shop version did not sell very well due to high manufacturing costs but it´s a really great guitar. i have #20.

the m.i.j. series offered three telecoustic models:

1. standard: 2-pc spruce top, basswood back, maple neck, cream tuners, rosewood fretboard and bridge

2. deluxe: 2-pc spruce top, mahogany back, pearl button tuners, rosewood fretboard, rosewood top/ ebony back bridge

3. custom: solid spruce top, honduras mahogany back and sides, no face dots, fender/schaller tuners with pearl buttons, pao ferro/ ebony laminated bridge, active e-elctronics

maybe this helps a little bit. unfortunately, there is only little documentation available on these instruments...

cheers, harald

The MIJs Telecoustics are really nice Teles, somewhat underrated and also flying under the radar. Can be hard to find also.

I'd love to track down a Custom Shop one though...

Thanks for that! I hadn't seen the Custom Shop version before, so I can now see that the MIJ is actually very similar. Cool. :D

Of course, if you ever want to part with your Custom Shop...

I own a Fender Telecoustic Deluxe (with the white scratchplate fitted) and I love it. I don't have a hard case though and cant find one to fit. Would love a case like that.

FYI- I am trying to sell my gorgeous MIJ Telecoustic.
It's currently on craigslist and I have lots of pics posted.

Please check it out.
I really am not sure which version I have, standard, deluxe?
I don't have pearl tuners, and is the back basswood or mahagony? Not sure.

Please take a look and tell me which one I have. Thanks!!!!

Wow- truly a nice guitar :!: So is also that MIJ on Craigslist . Is it possible to describe the sound? Both as an acoustic and with amplification

Reckon I'll have to play it and post on youtube eh?

If Fender made that guitar today, they'd want 1200 for it.

That's a nice looking guitar. I have been skeptical about these in the past, but this thread has aroused my curiousity. The specs on the current model indicate a fiberglass back/sides and laminated spruce top (they look quite different from yours though). http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0967310006

And they are really inexpensive - Guitar Center lists them for $255 with used ones for under $200. Guessing they are now made in China? Does anyone have one of this newer models? What do you think of it? I have never seen one in person.
