Hi there and thank you in advance.

I recently bought a very pretty ash, factory special run butterscotch tele. It has a very warm and rich sound and I want to love it. The problem is with its neck pup, which sound very weak, quiet and thin.

For instance, if I play a cord on the neck pup and then switch to the middle or bridge, I hear a noticeable increase in volume. The volume jump is startling.

I checked the wiring and nothing appears to be loose. Any hints? Thanks again. vpotus.

Hi vpotus,

Have you tried adjusting the height of the pickups? Using the Phillips screws on each side of the pickups, raise the neck pickup, and/or lower the bridge pickup until you get the balance that you want. For each pickup adjustment, you can raise the low E side for more bass response, raise the High E side for more treble response. Sometimes the pickups will sound better with one side higher than the other. If you raise the pickup too close to the strings you will lose sustain, too far away will lose volume, find a happy medium.

Hi shimmilou

Yes! I just did that and it seems to have solved my problem. Thanks.

It's always nice when the solution to your problem is such a quick fix. I've found on my blackout tele, that the middle and neck (both covered pups) need to be quite a bit higher than the bridge pickup to have even volume across them.

Hi Tim!

I've got a Blackout tele too and I really like it. I like it so much I'm going to sell my strat. I haven't had to tweak the position of pups...

Have fun.

Do some reading on setup instructions and recommended string separation distance for pickups. if the neck was that far out, maybe someone was messing with it and the bridge also.

There's more to pickup height adjustment than just setting them to a good perceived volume level.

Hey Potus...
Yeah, the Blackout is an awesome guitar, and I don't have a single complaint about it. I love the 3 pickup setup and the versatility that comes with that.

been looking to buy a tele and I just took a look at the blackout, I believe you posted a review of it in the guitar center website? any ways looks really good and might consider looking at one.

You would be correct that I posted a review of it on GC's website. I think my review was titled "Can't Beat it" and I was the one talking about planning on buying a highway one strat and leaving with the blackout Tele. I recommend this guitar to anyone looking for either a Tele or a Strat, you can get some good tones out of it, and the stock pickups have a great vintage tone to them.

As much as I like my blackout, I did have one complaint. The bevels on my frets were so gentle that I lost playing space in the frets. Sometimes my low E would fall off the neck.

The frets on my other guitars have much steeper slants on their ends.

Tim, how are your frets?

BTW... once I had my neck readjusted, the problem is hardly noticeable.

I haven't had that problem, although now that you mentioned it and I look at mine, the frets are filed at a pretty shallow angle. I think that it adds to the smooth feeling of the neck, but I do see how it could cause some minor issues when playing. Just thankfully hasn't affected me personally, could be that I've played mostly Fenders, and I find that the neck on this particular guitar has a real "familiar" feel to me.
