I was wondering what are the tonal effects of the Telecaster headstock vs. other headstock designs. Reason I ask is: there are Telecaster clones and custom Teles that have different headstock designs from the traditional Fender Tele such as the 70s model with the large Strat type. How do these design impact the tone and sound of the Telecaster?

I've heard it said that a larger headstock will improve sustain, but i don't know to what effect.

None that normal people can hear. There are many other things that have a much bigger impact on the tone then the headstock, such as pickups, body wood, neck wood etc..

Like the others have said the change in tone would be miniscule, if any. You would have to have superhuman hearing. But if you changed necks with different headstocks, you might be hearing differences in the necks themselves rather than the headstock. Every piece of wood is different, therefore every guitar neck is different. They all come from trees, right?

Regarding Tele clones, well Fender does have a copywright or whatever you call it on the Tele and Strat headstocks so clones have to have a different shaped headstock for legal reasons. It has nothing to do with tone.

There used to be a product called Fatfinger http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=420270
that you could clamp on to your headstock to add mass and 'sustain' (never tried one myself). But to have a headstock already with the same mass as the Fatfinger would mean that the headstock would be probably be HUGE and ugly.

If a man plays a Steinberger guitar in the woods, does it make a sound?
