I'm thinking of buying a new Fender guitar.

I already have a 50s Strat.

I dont know if I should buy a Jaguar or a Tele, since I dont really know if the sound is that different from a strat.
It would be a waste of money to buy like a 50s TELEcaster, if it sounds almost the same as my Strat.

Three questions:

So should I buy a Tele or a Jaguar? (I want something sounding different from my Strat)

Are the 50s Tele / Jaguar HH any good?

Are Japanese Jaguars good quality?

if anyone knows a link to a demo of a comparison between Strat-Tele-Jaguar, please link me up :)

Thx

I dunno man, after a strat, a tele would just be a burden because of the lack of contours, whammy, and third pup, but if you go into the store and play one you like go for it. As for Jags, I dunno much about them but I do know that they aren't that versitile and they're expensive. Get a strat with texas pickups or something I say, but I definately do your homework and play all the teles you can and see if you can make a good comparison.

Good luck, and gimme some feedback will ya?

The best thing to do would be play a strat, tele, and jag from the same amp (with no effects). Then you will be able to decide.

Hey man strats are a good starting point because they have way more features, so leave the poor guy alone. But yeah even in the 50's strats and teles had different sounds, so pick what you like, but don't forget what Isaid about a TX pup strat.

I'd definately checkout the " Crafted in Japan" Teles!!
The finish, playability, and price are AAA! The '52 Reissue I got
has great tone and is Flawless, and comparable to U.S. made
Fenders! Good Luck Man!

I think that if you want a different sound the jaguar is the choioce to make and the tele is a plainly cool guitar but so is the jag.

Teles and Strats are definitely not the same animal for many reasons.
At one point I did not think that Teles were "rock" sounding enough though many would disagree with me such as Keith Richards and Bruce Springsteen.
A few months ago I had an overwhelming urge to add a Tele to "the herd" and I now have two.
The best part about it is that the neck still feels a lot like my Strats, the sound however is much different, a lot more "glassy"
You'll have to decide for yourself if you like the sound, of course the best way is to get into a shop and play a few different ones to get a feel.
The Tele is not as comfortable as a Strat, but if you dig the sound, that won't be a big deal 8)

I've played them all, and my fav is a Tele. That's not to say some Tele's don't suck, so you have to play a bunch. I'd suggest you go to Guitarcenter or some equally huge guitar store and play everything they have. (You may actually buy someplace else!) I prefer a modern profile neck, ash body, and Fender Nocaster reissue pickups. Another recent discovery of mine is the Esquire reissue. Yes, its a Mexi, but it seems made well, and has a vintage look. I'm getting used to the baseball bat neck. The bright tone of the one pickup is amazing. BTW, there is no difference between "Crafted" in Japan and "made" in Japan guitars. Its just urban legend that "Crafted" Japanese guitars were only made for their home market and Fender allowed them to be made superior to USA guitars. The change in wording just depends on when it was made. That said, Japanese Fenders can be nice. Even the Mexi Fenders are coming up in quality. I found the Jag to be neck heavy and the neck profile was uncomfortable for me. Too many switches to mess with. I sold mine in six months. The Jag tone can mostly be matched with a Tele or Strat, anyway.

There is a huge difference in tones between the Tele and the Strat. Strats are more jangly or quacky, and the Tele is more twangy and pure sounding. There is no mistaking the differences in tone. Once you are familiar with both you can listen to a song and identify either one. They are both great, and one is not necessarily better sounding than the other. I say get a Tele as your next guitar. I have alyways said for distortion tones I like my Strat the best. For clean tones give me a Tele any day.
Good luck...

Go for a Strat or Tele with humbuckers for a different sound.
Maybe a Thinline Tele ?

TO say that the tele isnt as rock sounding as a strat is so far from true!! Like someone said earlier look at keith richards or bruce springsteen. I have another one that cant be forgotten. Tom Petty. I have olayed maryjanes last dance a million times, and it just dont sound right on anything but a tele!!!

Listen to early Led Zeppelin for Telecaster sounds.
The guitarsolo in Stairway to heaven is a Telecaster.

Let me add a little more mud to the water.

#1 Deluxe Nashville Tele (ASH body)
#2 TC-90 Thinline Tele (ASH body)
#3 Jazzmaster

In that order!
