hi all, first post here - seems like a great forum :)

any way, i recently acquired a cheap highly modified squire telecaster custom, which has been suited and booted with emg humbuckers, new tone pots, professional setup / fret dressing etc. Despite 'only being a squire', it's a lovely axe.

so to be honest, i'm now thinking of selling my stock 72 custom ri.

I was mainly wondering if the japanese ones hold more worth than the current MIMexico ones. I was thinking of popping it on ebay but wondered if i ought to put a reserve price.

Apologies if this seems a slightly inappropriate first post - it's not a for sale type post, and i won't be selling it for a while any way - simply wondering about the whole MIJ vs MIM when it comes to these guitars. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi rampanthamster,

Typically some Japanese guitars might be worth a little more than a similar Mex model. You can try a "completed listings" search on eBay to see what similar models have sold for. But, unless it is some special model, or an older RI, it usually won't be worth what you paid for it new.

From what I've seen from completed listing searches that I have done, it seems that auctions with reserve prices tend to scare bidders away as compared to ones with no reserve. I've seen many auctions that start at .99 cents, actually bring in more money than similar auctions with a reserve price. Many times, the ones with a reserve price are ignored, or the reserve isn't met, while the no reserve auctions will go for more than the reserve price on the other auctions. :)
