So the past couple of months I been GASsing for a Blackout tele- black on black, maple neck. Today I walked into my favorite local music store and they got two blacktops in there; a jazzmaster and the exact tele I want.

It was very weird coincidence :) But I only have one problem:
My dad would never let me buy another guitar. He's not much of a music guy, and he's says I have way too much guitar stuff ( Which consist of my Am. Stand. Strat, 68' ampeg rocketreverb, and two footpedals) and I haven't been allowed to get anything new. God forbid I get another guitar

But I want it sooo Bad!

I would like to get it too so I can take it to college instead of my strat, which I shelled out an arm and a leg for... it would be less of a worry.

Most people who aren't musicians or artists have a hard time appreciating gear, it's all a waste of money to them.. I can understand your pops not wanting to spend his own money on your passions, but you shouldnt ever let that influence your own decisions regarding your own purchases. It is a good idea to get a guitar that you wont mind getting beat to hell for college, cause it will happen.. every drunk person on campus is a PRO lead player.. dont forget it LOL...

So you have 1 guitar, 1 amp, and 2 pedals yet your dad thinks that is way too much guitar stuff??? How can you have less than 1 guitar and amp? It sounds like he doesn't want you to have ANY guitar or music related items. Sorry to hear that.

I don't mean to instigate any family quarrels, but does your dad have more than one of anything? What are his hobbies? Maybe try and have him relate to you:

You: "Hey dad. You know your model train collection has like 20 of the same thing and you are really passionate about and would get ticked if one of your trains broke. Well, that's the way I feel about my music and guitar."

Dad: "Gee son, now that you mention it, I see your side of the story in a rational way. The sensible thing to do would be to get you a backup guitar to take to college. Here have a beer...today you have become a man."

Or, maybe you'll get the Blacktop Tele for a graduation present before heading off to college. I mean why the hurry? The Blacktop guitars will still be around this spring.

Last resort, if you are paying for this guitar with your own money that you worked for, then ignore Pops and get the darn guitar already.

edit to add: I had two guitars when I was 18. I kept the nice one at home and took the beater to the college dorms. I was glad I did!

well, my pops collects two things- guns and cigars 8) And he has a good bit of both, so I'm going to use that as examples.

I'm hoping to get a job again soon (my last one ended over the summer) and who knows, maybe I'll get an American model if I can get the money. (but that would defeat the purpose of taking a beater to college...)

But you're right too- I got all the time to decide

Go for the Deluxe Blackout over the Blacktop if you have to choose just one. The Blackout is a much better guitar. That's just my opinion of course but I would imagine I am not the only one who holds that opinion. The Blacktops look cool and they are the thing now, but the blackout is a better guitar from top to bottom.

Jimbo612,

You have to follow your passion whether your dad agrees with you or not. He is just another person with a different opinion. If you are approaching college and are expected to choose how you are going to spend the rest of your life, career wise, you are old enough to decide whether or not you want another guitar. However, always make a well rounded decision. It's that simple!
