Hello art,

It means the strings do not run through the body of the Telecaster, instead, they terminate in the rear lip of the "ashtray" bridge.

Hi art t,

Is it that the strings are through bottom of the bridge, not through the body?

Exactly. Fender did this in circa 1959 (maybe a span from sometime in late 1958 to early 1960); it is rumored that Jimmy Page's Tele from LZI was a top loader that may have been converted back to rear loading.

Fender also used top loading bridges on the 1983/84 Standard and Elite Teles (two different bridges - the Elite Tele had small active humbuckers and therefore the same bridge as a hardtail Elite Strat while the Standard Tele had a flat bridge plate). FMIC used a top loading bridge on the first few years of the MIM Standard Tele (not sure when they were introduced but I think that changed to string through by say 1998, maybe earlier). Sorry for the sketchy dates - I'm a bit more up on my Strat history than my Tele history.
