My brother recently purchased a Squire Vintage Modified Tele Custom that is fitted with two humbuckers. He's been wanting to replace the HB's with a higher quality set. I'm wondering if most humbuckers would be drop in replacements (I've been told most won't fit by the folks at Guitar Center). If there are a select few then what do you recommend we replace them with. My brother and I would like something traditional as opposed to a set of active or high output metal style pups. We would like to put in some kind of PAF or a set of the Fender Wide Range pups. Other than the OEM pups this guitar is an amazing piece of work (especially the neck).

Hi Dead Ahead,

Most humbuckers are a direct swap for that guitar. But you need F-Spaced humbuckers. Back when electric guitars were first made and Fender and Gibson were going it at, Fender had a wider spaced bridge than Gibson. Because of this different sized humbuckers are required for the two.

As thats a fender made product, the width you're after is the F-Spaced shape. Most of the major players do F-Spaced pickups so you shouldn't have a problem finding them.

You don't HAVE to have F-Spaced, but seriously if you're buying the pickups anyway it's probably better to buy the right ones.

Dan

Seymour Duncan makes F spaced full sized humbuckers in many of their main pickups, like the Pearly Gates, I am pretty sure in the '59, and others.

Also, not being an expert at this, I think you might need an F spaced humbucker in the bridge pickup position only, but I could be wrong.

I would call Fender Customer Support, get the number off of like MF's website of mfg info. Fender Customer Support can be found with a google search and will be able to tell you the exact specifications of the humbuckers in that Squier and will be able to tell you if they are F spaced or regular spaced. Since that guitar was built from the ground up as a humbucker guitar, it may have standard spaced humbuckers on it. I have the P90 version of that same guitar, a great guitar, and the P90's seem like they are regular spacing.

Hope this helps, but a call to Fender will answer the question with a fair level of certainty, although some of their customer service people aren't sure if they are working for Gibson or Schecter or "whatever....", it seems. Demand to speak with a good technician or technical trained person and you will get a good answer.

Good humbuckers like Seymour Duncans, no affiliation, make a big difference when compared to cheap humbuckers, even GFS humbuckers. GFS seems to talk it up on their website but the pickups don't seem to compare, by my experience, with the more expensive premium pickups; and the stock pickups in that Squier are not bad pickups if they are anything like the P90's designed by seymour duncan on my guitar. Why not step up instead of sideways.

check out ebay. I've seen sets of new fender wide range or seth lover pickups reasonably priced. beware of chop shop pickups as the wires may be to short. they don't always take much care or thought when they dismantle a guitar to sell for parts. look for boxed or original packaged sets.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm pretty familiar with pups and the myriad of different makers and types as long as the pups are single coils. I only know what I've played of friends guitars, read, and heard when it comes to hb's.
I definitely have some ideas for the types of hb's that I will recommend to my brother. My questions were with the fitting issues. I've been letting my brother run with trying to get the info on whether or not a most hb's would require modification to the pickguard. I assumed most would fit, however from what he's being told by the folks he's talked to (who may or may not have any clue what they're talking about as well as having dubious intentions) most won't fit. I found that hard to believe so I figured you the guys on the fender forums would know best. Thanks again for the info and I will check with Fender Customer Service as well with the pickup manufacture before purchase. I've also found some links on slightly enlarging the pickguard openings if necessary.

Thanks,
Russ
