Yesterday I was in my local guitar shop and played my first 2010 American Standard. Great guitars...but I noticed something that I wasn't aware of....the necks on the new American Standards are very glossy and have a thick lacquer on them. Is this new this year? My '04 MIA and my several MIM's do not have this thick gloss so I was just wondering when this new finish started.
I kind of liked it, so I'm not complaining. I just wasn't aware of this new finish on the neck. Were the '09's like this? What are your opinions on them? Like it or dislike it?

Hi ES11,

Yes, great guitars, but no lacquer, it's polyurethane. The front of the neck has the highly buffed gloss, and the back a satin finish. I have an '09 with the same neck finish, it plays very smoothly and comfortably, I really like the feel of the neck, not to mention the rest of it. This type of neck finish goes back to at least '08 :D

Shimmilou is correct - the glossy fingerboards on American Standards go back to 2008 when the current model was introduced.

Wow....where have I been?!? Ha ha ha. I guess I get stuck in my ways with my older Teles and haven't noticed the nw models. Now that I've seen/played them I'm really gassing for one. I'll probably be $1,000 lighter soon...

Thanks for the info guys!

I have an 08 and I love the finish on the neck. It's definately one of my favorite things about it.

I have a 2k10 telecaster (usa) and I love it.. It plays better every day and is the BEST electric guitar I own now, and honestly the only other guitar I play in my collection these days is my acoustic, it's a Gibson J-45 Standard...but as far as electrics go, Nothing comes close to the guitar I have named Brandy, She is a sunburst beauty with a Maple Neck.. I prefer the maples over the rosewood necks, plus they look cooler as they age  They do have a nice glossy neck and it does have a certain feel about it, it makes it hard to put down...
