I don't really like the way these things look as far as the worn part goes. However, I played one the other day at a store, and I liked the way it played. And all the guitars I'm finding I like to play are not matching up with how I like the way they look. So I may have to compromise.

But what bothers me about the road worn, is: When they hack up the finish, won't that make it that much easier to get worn faster? Like the fretboard? Seems like the finish will wear just that much faster. Or do they put a finish over the thing once they're done ruining it?

I like the colors of this particular one, it's that butterscotch with a black pickgaurd. I like those colors, I could just do without all the weathering. But this one did play nice. I wonder if the wearing in actually makes it feel better? hehehehehe

What says you guys?

from my observations of the road worn vs truly worn vintage guitars, the fretboard wear on the road worns is "simulated" wear. As in, it is not true wear into the fret board but a very light simulation. I think if anything it would wear very slightly faster than if it didnt have the simulated wear n it. I dont think you would notice it wearing at a much faster pace. If Fender aged the fret board with real or even more realistic looking simulated fretboard wear then you might notice a difference in how fast it would wear out compared to a new fretboard.

As for the rest of the body, then yes I would imagine it would wear faster than a new guitar.

The wearing in makes to neck feel better for me, especially the back, but that is just my opinion.

So you think the wearing in actually makes it feel better. It did feel nice to me, which is why I'm even considering it. You right, it had a smoothness to it that a brand new one doesn't. But I don't know if I can get over the look. I have to go look and play that one again.

I definitely like the feel of the unfinished wood on the back of the neck, it just feels so smooth compared to one with a slick or satin finish. You could always try to sand down the back of the neck on the guitar you play now to get a more smooth feel to it. The Road Worn guitars and relics in general seem to be something people either love or hate so if you were getting one just for the feel of the neck then I was say pass on the RWorn, because if you dont like the rest of it then youll end up being dissatisfied with the guitar as a whole.

A while back my local GC had about a dozen or so RW Strats and Teles and a couple of them did "feel" pretty good However, I agree that the neck wear in between the frets looks really cheesy - almost like a belt sander gone crazy!

Yeah, poserish. Cheesy is a good word too. I don't want to look like a rock star, or pretend like I have a Rockstars guitar. Of course this looks more like one that was left out in the rain by grampa 1 two many times.

I'm in the same camp. I was demoing a couple of amps in the private room at GC and they had a RW strat in there. I play a strat, so I thought what the heck I'll just use this for demo purposes. I was really impressed wit the feel of the neck and started rethinking these things.

Turns out we may be in luck. Fender is releasing new RW teles for 2011. They have modernized them and toned down the relicing quite a bit. RW feel without the generic worn look. The one pic they released is black/maple with HB in the neck. Looks great!

Reehheeeeheeeeaaaly. Hmmmmm.....

I'm going to play a classic 60's series this weekend. If I like it, I'm going for it. Even though the color is not my first pic. (candy apple red. I prefer the white, and the black would be better, but these things are hard to find in stock anywhere, and I'm pretty sure it's what I want.) I've been in the hunt for a long time and I'm not sure I want to wait for them. But it will be interesting to see. I prefer a rosewood neck anyways. But that's not to say I dislike the maple.

ABPOS - have you checked w/ Sweetwater? They list a CAR Classic '60s and can special order the white model. You should at least give them a call and see what they say. You might as well get exactly what you want.

The website shows it not in stock. I have no idea how long it will take to get one. I'm getting antsy. But yeah, I'm still not sure if I want to settle for the red. I prefer the black over the red if I can't have white.

I did play the road worn again today at the store I was previously at. And it plays really nice. But the frets are really tall on it. I'm betting they're jumbo. However, they don't seem to bother me as much on this guitar. I don't know why. I still would prefer the smaller though. For some reason, I like the vintage tuners and bridge. I'm not sure why. But I do.

i can only speak of the neck wear first thing i do when buying a guitar is sand the back of the neck. wearing down that glossy finish that gets sticky when your hands get sweaty.

neck wise ill take a raod worn. body wise i prefer to do my own .

I love Roadworns... I have a Blonde 50s that I heavily modded with a Bakelite blackguard, some new pickups (Bill Lawrence), Barden Brass Compensated Saddles, and a new .047 capacitor. It's got a great tone and it plays great.

As far as the realistic look or not compared to vintage, all I'm gonna say as that I've had a couple experienced guys think its a vintage without looking at the back of the headstock and the guitar up close. For instance, after a gig with my Eagles tribute band where I use the guitar on "Take it Easy", I had a long time guitarist from the band that went on before us come up during break and ask me how I was able to afford a real '50s Telecaster and get that Blackguard tone. I didn't tell him right away, I changed the subject and suggested he try it out. I let him play it unplugged then quietly through my TRRI and he said "This thing plays like a DREAM!" and then before he left he said "So, you never told me, how did you end up with a nice vintage Telecaster?" I said, "That's a new Fender Roadworn I got a few months back". He said "I wouldn't be caught dead with a Roadworn reliced guitar, you must be joking" and acted put off. I laughed and said "Well, you just played one, and you seemed to be digging it and thinking it was a real vintage piece!" We parted ways soon thereafter. :D

So while I don't think it could ever be considered to be the same as a vintage guitar, for those of us who can't afford broke in vintage instruments, reliced ones with good vintage style pickups and saddles seem to do the trick! :) That's just my opinion, and you know what they say, everybody's got one!
