Both the pots have 1979 on them...... And there is a 79 stamp on the body too as u can see. Is it safe to say its a 1979 model?

Sure - dating by serial number is pretty inexact because Fender typically (and particularly back in the CBS days) used up their decals before changing over to the next year. The S8XXXXX (1978) numbers could have easily been used on into 1979; it seems like people generally use the latest date among the neck, body and hardware to "date" the guitar.

thanks for the info John....... will take it as a 79 then :D

Anyone know of any good places to hunt down a bridge and saddle :?:
Dont want new, want one that suits this guitar as in one from the same or similar era.... do the bridges have serial numbers as do necks to indentify the year of make?

I'm fairly sure that Fender used the same 3-saddle vintage-style box bridge on the "regular" Telecaster throughout its long run (which ended when the "Standard" and "Elite" models came out in 1983).

Only the bridges actually installed at the factory on the American Vintage '52 Reissues have serial numbers - that was period correct for 1952; however, the AV '62 has its serial number on the neck plate so the bridge either has a part number or maybe a patent number (possibly both). These bridges with just the part number and/or patent number are what Fender sells as replacement parts.

What I am not sure of is whether a late 70s Tele would have had steel saddles or brass saddles (Fender switched from brass to steel around 1960, but I can't remember if they switched back sometime later). At any rate a replacement vintage Tele bridge would be appropriate for your guitar. If you prefer to have a 6-saddle bridge, Fender also makes a vintage-style box bridge with individual saddles (they inlcude these in the case when you buy a new American Vintage '52 Tele or '62 Tele Custom).

Ok........just looked on ebay at this -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Vintage-Te ... 483d4ee746

this, other than looking new and shiny, would be the same as was on there in the first place :?: apart from the saddle material :?:

I have seen a 69-79 original bridge and saddle on ebay but they are going for like £250+ :o

Yep, that would be the bridge. I just googled "1978 Fender Telecaster" and found a bunch of photos of 1978/79 Teles with what appear to be steel saddles. Here's a photo of an '78 in the ever-so-funky Antigua finish with steel saddles appears to have steel saddles:

EDIT: I don't think this source sells outside of the USA, but I did find that you can get the steel saddles from Fender - I guess you would have to buy the bridge then buy the steel saddles. Here is the link - at least you could get the part number:
