Hi guys/girls, greetings from the UK. First time on this site for me.

Reading some of these topics tells me some of you people really know your stuff on these amazing instruments!!

Here is were I need your help - I have just purchased an oldish tele, from the serial number I date it to 77/78 but im not 100% sure.
How can I find out the history of the guitar? or is this even possible?

The guitar is in a right state (been in storage for years!!) and needs some serious TLC!!! but even in its current state its a truly awesome guitar and I love it already and havent even played it!!

Any help/tips/advise is very much appreciated.

Looking forward to reading up on all these topics, sure beats working haha!!!

Regards
Steve

Alright Steve.

Quite a big question mate. What part of the history of the Tele do you want to know about? How it started out as a broadcaster/esquire and evolved to what we know it as today?

As for your guitar, we'd like to see pictures. Then tell you more about it.

Did you see this beaut on Ebay?

Yeah sure mate.

Send em to

nikininja@ntlworld.com

Or you can do it yourself. Open a photobucket account. Upload your photos to that site. Then if you hover the cursor over the picture you want to share you'll see a boxed out section appear. That will have a load of codes in it. Copy the one that begins

Paste that into your reply.

I'll be glad to help if you want to send em to the above email address though.

Steve if possible send two more pictures please. One of the inside of the neck pocket on the body. One of the heel of the neck.

Looks to be a very nice example of mid 70's tele to me. Perhaps as early as 75/76. Not too sure of the bridge or saddles but I'm no expert.

One thing about the CBS era tele. It suffered a lot less at the hands of CBS. It was much better received by the guitar buying public. Not that all CBS strats were bad, by any means. Just that you see a lot of people moan about em, and hardly any moan about the Tele's.
BTW you're not a million miles from me. I'm in Grantham, south Linc's.

cool!! thanks a million for posting the pics, not the best quality I know as I took them from my fone!
Ill take the other two pics after work mate and email you them from my fone tonight, looks like the marking on the end of the neck ends in 94. Would that suggest its a 94?
The saddle and bridge seem to be the only things that arent original to me, having said that im by no means a guitar expert! dont know why someone would change it to be honest

Dunno what this kind of thing is worth in full working order? not that I ever plan on selling it!

Yeah, your not a millions miles away mate

Thanks again dude

The guitar definitely has a replacement bridge - Fender stuck with the 3-saddle vintage bridge on the "basic" Tele until they "updated" it to the "Standard" and "Elite" Tele models in 1983.

We do need to see the neck pocket markings to tell if the body is a replacement; I think the Fender body should have a serial number sticker in the pocket like the one under the pickguard. I'm not sure about that number stamp that is under the neck plate; I've not seen a stamp like that on a Fender body but anything is possible. I've seen a lot more Strats taken apart than I've seen Teles.

thanks for that John.......

Ill take a pic of the neck pocket later, are there any other tell tale signs that it might not be the orginal body?

Scratch plate markings match the neck but I guess that doesnt mean the body is also orginal

Cheers again guys

Neck pocket looks good to me also; I had just never seen a body with a stamp on the other side under the neck plate before. I think the only change has been the bridge - but that was a pretty common late 70s/early 80s "player mod" on a Tele.

Both the pots have 1979 on them...... And there is a 79 stamp on the body too as u can see. Is it safe to say its a 1979 model?
