I just came back from my local GC and they had a mexican telecaster in blonde with a brass saddle bridge and tinted neck and a black pick guard. They had it sitting next to a '52 reissue and if you knew little or nothing about these guitars you would swear they were the same. Played it and it sounded great. My question is has anyone seen one of these and can you tell me if the wood is ash? The people working tonight couldn't tell me. I have been looking for a tele and if this one is ash I may go back and get it.

Hi CPATTER328,

Pictures would help a lot. :)

Blond finish...black pickguard...brass saddles...made in Mexico...hmmm...sounds like a Baja Telecaster to me. Yes it is ash. They are the best Tele's coming out of Ensenada in my opinion. I have one and it's great. Do a search here for 'baja tele', they get brought up often.
Here is the Fender product page for the Baja: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0141502389 note that they only have a pic of the Desert Sand option. If the description doesn't fit with what you saw, then let us know. Maybe Fender has an FSR (Fender Special Run) of Tele's for Guitar Center. They do that every once in a while. But I bet you saw a Baja. 4-way switch and S-1 volume knob would prove it.

I'm not surprised that the GC sales dudes couldn't tell you what the guitar was. They are not paid to think. There have been times when I have to tell them about what I am buying and do my own sale.

I'm convinced that if I enter a guitar center, the IQ level in the whole place raises significantly. And I'm not even smart.

I suppose you could find a good deal there, if it's not all covered in snot, boogers and dirt. Hehhehehehehehe

I just don't like that place, obviously. Although in it's defense, I went on a Saturday afternoon in a very busy part of town. Which is probably where most of them are located.

Anyways, good luck with the guitar. If it feels right, it probably is right!!!

Nope. Not a Baja.

It's a Fender Special Run only for Guitar Center.

I got the 2009 version of this Ash FSR with the modern bridge instead of the vintage. Beautiful guitar. I swear it looks like a single piece body... Looks sweet and plays sweet! It was on GC and MF site up until this past summer.

I just remembered that I bought this time last year so it must be when they turn these loose...just in time for Holiday gift giving! Clever.

For as much as Guitar Center gets slammed, my GC in Oklahoma City, while not perfect, isn't a bad place. I also get to the GC in Amarillo as well. Neither are that bad, and I figure I'm gonna know more about what I want than the kid behind the counter, so I don't get too worried if he doesn't have the answer to what I'm asking.

There have been several nice FSR Tele's released through GC in the past year. The natural ash, the new Butterscotch, and there is a copperburst and a silverburst that aren't too bad either. I actually really like the Butterscotch and the natural ash a lot.

They are great Tele's just the way they are, and if a guy wants to, they are a terrific platform for a mod project. I've got a couple of nice MIA Tele's, but more and more I like having the vanilla standard MIM Tele to mess with. I'm thinking the new Butterscotch would be awesome w/ some vintage p'ups and tuners. Maybe I'd better go get one! A man can never have too many Tele's! :D

i swear by my GC exclusive tele.
i'll put it up against anything out there. i might not win, but mine will shock the hell out of the most picky of players.
i play it more so than rickyD's fav that i own.
mine sounds really good for a mid priced guitar.
i wouldnt think twice to buy another one thats for sure.

I agree. This GC FSR is wonderful! And the best part is that I bought for over $100 less than what GC was asking. I'll never think twice about another GC FSR. Great experience with this one.

mine ws going or $499 at my local GC, but a friend worked for
a owner in another business and got it at cost. i then bought it for
like $250 i think it was when it was just a couple months old at best.
would i pay $499 fo rit? oh yes. would i pay more dor it? oh heck yes.
i have several guitars to choose from and that tele was my go to guitar for months. im currently breaking in a newer HW1 or it would still be my #1.
again i would have no problems putting it up against a MIA tele.
fit and finish are perfect. the tone is 100% tele.

Are we talking about the butterscotch blonde FSR with noiseless pickups? If so, isn't that selling for over $600? More like $650?
