My new Tele Deluxe is too bright and I can't seem to compensate for it by rolling off the treble with my tone control. Considering replacing the pickups and could use some suggestions. Would be interested in knowing if anyone else is having this experience; would welcome alterante pickup suggestions; or even amp settings ( I play through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe w/ 1- 12" Celestion Blue). Would humbuckers solve the problem?

How 'bout different strings? Pure Nickel would be warmer then nickel-platd. Flattened pure nickel would be warmer then round pure nickel, etc.

Telecasters are naturally bright and twangy guitars.

Is your Tele too bright through other amps? Is it just the bridge pickup that's too bright for you, or is the neck pickup bright also? Do other guitars also sound bright through your amp?

Replacing pickups should be a last resort. Have you tried?:
1. Checking pickup height.
2. Breaking in the Celestion Blue. They sound stiff when new. (p.s. Isn't the Blue rated at only 15 watts? I would expect it blow out quickly in a 40 watt Hotrod Deluxe. How do you do it?).
3. Using a different speaker, less bright and chimey than the Blue.

I think...and metropolis already suggested it...that you should check the pickup height. Lowering the pickups awy from the strings should take a little bit of the edge off the tone.

Bright tone is the nature of the beast as far as Teles go and that's what makes them so unique.Changing out the pups would be a bit drastic and would take away the most identifying characteristic of the Tele's sound. I'd try the pickup lowering and string type or brand change first maybe you could even try flatwound strings as they are generally a lot mellower than roundwound.Adjusting the tone of your amp may also be an easy fix if the guitar's tone circuit doesn't affect it to your liking-which I find strange because the tone pot should be able to roll off more than enough treble. Maybe switching to a different taper or value tone pot would prove helpful.

Contact John Benson. He'll make you whatever pickup sound you want for your Tele at a very reasonable price. Just tell him how you want it to sound, and he'll make it. We had a Tele set made for our other guitar player that is awesome. The Bass tones coming out of the neck pickup blew us away.

I have my 4th set of Benson pickups on the way. Every set he's made me so far has been very impressive.

Exchange your Tele for a Les Paul.

First play with the height but if it doesn't work just try different pickups. You can find pickups without the "ice pick" that still preserve the twang. Worked wonders for the bright bridge pickup in my Strat and it still sounds Straty.

The Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue model gets good reviews, check out the Fender Custom Shop Texas model and that's without going for boutique manufacturers. I also heard good things about zhangbucker pickups. You really do have a lot of options.

Just the opposite - higher value (500k) goes well with humbuckers because it rolls off less highs. Too get darker tones you need 250k, which usually comes stock on Teles.

He said "caps", not "pots".

Or possibly a larger size string. If you've got .9's or .10's you could go to .11's.

Plus the other suggestions. I think teles are on the bright side, but that being said, I bet there is a combination that could work. Which pups do they put in the deluxe?

It shows you have the N3 noiseless with s-1 switching. Is that what you got. That's what the current models have at least. All I know is when I played an american standard it had a nice creamy, not too bright sound. That's all I know. But I've played others that can sound bright.
