I am a new player and really want to get a Tele. Can't really justify spending the money on an American model so am going to buy a Standard MIM.

What are the biggest differences besides craftsmanship and what mods would you guys do if any?

Not really looking to play "lead" more of a rythm guitar guy.

I would get it and play it before I even decided to make any mods. It will probably be just fine stock for what you want.

i would not advise a beginner to start modifying their instruments right away. wait until you have an idea of your style and how you want your guitar to sound before you start changing stuff.

My electric was actually a Squier Tele Deluxe. Great playing guitar. If you're serious about playing and you want to get a long-term instrument, the standard is great! The main differences I've seen really just come down to color choice and the pickups

I guess mods is the wrong way to put it. Are there any specific problems with the MIM that I should be looking for? I realize that changing pick-up's and that kind of stuff can and should be don e down the road after I have become more familiar with the guitar and start to develope "my" sound (or at least close to what is going on in my head). But are there things that I need to watch out for when shopping?

I have failed to mention that I am a lefty so going and trying a bunch of the same guitar usually is not even possible, most places have one maybe 2 in stock.

The MIM guitars are fine out of the box. Go to a music store and keep playing em until one feels right. You will now it when it happens. The electronics are different then American's but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Find the one that feels right. Play the crap out of it. Then worry about modding it. Spend your time playing unless you want to become a luthier or are already proficient with the insturument.

Oh,definitely. I have an american ash, and you can tell the differences, but the real selling point on the guitar for me has always been the feel. The neck, the weight, and the comfort of the instrument. So, like someone already said, play the hell out of a bunch and go from there. Don't worry about mods, but do know that the action and the neck can be easily adjusted to your liking! These are great guitars, so you can rest assured that any of the standards will be wonderful for you

ive been playing both my teles (and my other Ibanez guitars) like crazy and honestly after a while you really dont find a need to modify your guitar that much. At least IMO. I think that my teles play just fine, you really don't need to mod them IMO

Tell you what I think of mim Fenders. I have owned a mim Stratocaster for about a year, I love this guitar, play it a lot. I also owned a Gibson faded SG, I traded that Saturday for a mim Telecaster. My Tele feels great, plays great and sounds great! My advice is the same as everyone else's, play all of them at the store (I did), one will feel and sound better to you then the rest. Good Luck!

I bought an MIM tele 2 months ago. I went to the store to try out the Highway 1 model but was not as impressed as I was with the Standard. The only mod I made was to replace the pickguard. I'm pretty satisfied with the guitar's quality.

I bought a MIM Tele in Sunburst as my beginner guitar, just to see if I was going to continue to play. Well, I'm still playing and I really like the standard tele, I once thought about changing the pups, but after I read the manual and properly setup my tele to my liking, no pup change necessary, at all. I like the way it sounds and the quality is very good. I have D'Ad 9's on it and I switch playing my American Tele w/ D'Ad 10's to my MIM.
Good Luck.

I bought the MIM and could not be happier. I have a little fret buzz on the EAD strings but that is a matter of set up I am sure. Maybe someday I will get some Kinman pick ups for to but other than that I am really really happy.

With Squier, you're getting a well-made, good playing guitar with acceptable electronics and cosmetics. You can make little upgrades as you can afford them, but I wouldn't be too worried about that right now. Find one that suits you from an appearance and playability standpoint, and go from there. There are a lot of upgrades and modifications that you can make for not very much money that will make the guitar easier to play and look like your guitar.

The first thing I did with my Tele was reverse the control panel because I was bumping my pickup switch with my hand during play, changing the setting. When I bump the volume control, it doesn't move. Easy to do, and it make the guitar play better for me. My point is that you should do what makes the guitar work better for you, not buy a set of pickups because your guitar hero uses them.
