OK, I've been looking and looking for what electric I want. When I was in my twenties, I was in bands and I owned a couple of teles. I had a couple of other guitars too, but my tele was pretty much my go to guitar.

So, after getting back into playing, I went out shopping for what I want. I like certain things about other models, but I've pretty much decided on a tele. I do favor a smaller scale, but the tele just feels right to me.

I do know that I like smaller frets also, so, I see that the 60's player guitar has vintage, and I like a rosewood neck.

However, I've played plenty of mexican normal ole teles that I've been happy with. In fact, the mexican standards seem to all feel real similar to me, and good enough.

So here's the rub, do I just settle for the vanilla? Will it serve me well? I'm thinking so. But, I also wonder if I should up the money and buy an American. Is it really worth the extra $540???? I played an American Standard today that was nice. But I'm not sure it was that much more nice. Will they last longer? I know the electrics are a little different, but I'm not sure the mexi's aren't good enough. Plus, I could always change that out later.

Then, like I said, there is that classic players 60's model that has the vintage frets, but I've yet to see one in a store. And it has a rosewood neck. The maple isn't a deal breaker though.

So, anyone got any advice? I don't want to order one and wait though. I'd rather play if first and then buy.

Get the MIM one that feels the best to you, then get a set of custom shop pick ups.

You can always have the frets dressed if there to high for you.

i bought the guitar center exclusive tele, ash body.
i had it set up and put 11's on it.
i will put that up against any current tele out there for playability.
the damn thing is just sweet. its my cheapest guitar and my goto guitar as well.
go figure that out will ya lol. go try one, if ya dont like it you can take them back i believe within 30 days. you will love it and save a small fortune.
go to their website and read the reviews.

What I find interesting is that I've played a lot of different guitars in the last few months, and I don't know if it's me, but I swear the Mexi Tele's seem to be me the most consistent in quality. I have to say I would almost say the same thing for the Mexi Strats.

That being said, I'm no expert and I haven't played many american made guitars or upper dollar value for that matter. But to me, it seems like they're doing something right down mexico way. It could be that my budget is swaying my brain. I don't want to spend 1k on a guitar, if I don't have to. I did play a few really high dollar guitars and I will say I could feel a difference. One was a Japanese made gretsch that was like 2k. It was a niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice playing guitar. I played a few american made teles, and like I said before, they were nice, but I just don't know if they were that much nicer.

I appreciate the input and keep it coming ya'll.

I'm with the others.....I love the MIM Teles that I have. They feel great and sound excellent. I also have a MIA, but I find myself playing the MIM's more often.

As long as you like the guitar you should go for it.

the MIM is really picking up pace with MIA guitars in my opinion.
sure the $1,500 strats are heaven in your hands but the MIM is a nice working mans guitar. great for gigging and jamming out.
ive bought a few cheaper guitars so i can leave the nice stuff at the house.
i like the stuff im buying. the MIM is best bang for the buck guitars.

ABPOS,

You can't go wrong with a new MIM Standard. I bought 3 this year from Sweetwater, sight unseen, for projects, and they are terrific guitars.

You may want to look at the Deluxe Nashville as well. (3 pups) You can get them with a rosewood neck. I have 2 of them and I think they're great guitars.

Also look at all the different Classic Series Teles. The CS 60s is prolly the best of the MIM Teles. Don't be afraid to order one from Sweetwater. They usually have a the Candy Apple Red in stock and will have it to you in just a few days. I deal w/ Sweetwater a lot, and have never had a problem. I'm quite sure that if I ever did, they would make things right very quick. Their customer service is superb.

Also look at the Classic Player Baja. Several guys here have them and really like 'em. They do, I think, have bigger frets.

Look at the Road Worn '50s. Again, a very nice guitar.

All the above are MIM guitars. I own about a dozen different MIM Tele's from across the spectrum and I don't have a bad one in the lot. Both the Baja and Road Worn '50s are on my short list.

Are the American better? Sure - a little. I have several MIA's and Japenese Teles that are very nice guitars, but they aren't that much better. And if you are thinking about changing pups anyway, I wouldn't even think of buying a MIA and then changing things. And honestly, I like 21 frets vs 22 on a Tele anyway. Stick w/ the MIMs for making mods.

Good luck - let us know what you get!

Yup - I love my Teles! Some I've bought new, some I've got used. I really like my MIM Esquire too - just wish I had the real thing!

I like the GC Ash Tele you have. I'm just waiting to find one.

For me, the Tele is just "it". It feels good in my hands, I can get a tremendous amount of different sounds out of them, and they have a history to them. I haven't really messed around much w/ the humbucker Tele's, (the new BlackTop, or the Classic Series '72's), or the Thinlines ('69 and '72), but it's only a matter of time (and money) until I have a few in my line-up. I have a Custom Shop or two in the works sometime in my future too.

I've got 8 different Strats, a Mustang, a Cyclone, a few different Squiers (Vista Series and 51's) and a couple of Basses. I've even got a Baritone Jag, just to give me some lower end for some Rock-a-Billy stuff. But I always come back to my Tele's.

You know what you need to get - seriously? Find a Squier 51. You'll love it. It's got a really nice Tele neck, a Strat body, and some unique electronics. I've been squirreling away a few of them lately as well for some build projects. You can prolly find a decent one for $125. I've got a couple of players and a couple of brand new ones. I've been buying ones that guys bought new and kept in the box, so I've been dropping about $175 - 200/each on them. It seems the price on them has been sneaking up $50 or so lately, so you might want to grab one. I'll bet you really like it! I wish Fender would bring them out as a MIM or MIA Special Edition.

I like .11's also.

I probably wouldn't change the pups on american. I wouldn't on a mexican if it sounds good enough.

I read a review on line somewhere that really made me want to wait for an American. But every time I play a mexican, I'm fine with it. Something to chew on I guess.

Plus, I'm not made of money, and I'm also trying to put together a little bit of recording equipment. And my acoustic needs work.

SWEETWATER!! I just talked to a guy I know who works there as a rep. His name is AJ Peterson. I used to go to church with him, until he moved to Indy. I have thought about buying a guitar there from them.

Are they set up well when you get them from that place?

I think that the MIM Fenders are generally very good guitars and a great value.

I have an American Standard Telecaster though and I'm very satisfied with it. The quality is excellent and it's just a great guitar. I got it used for $650 in close to mint brand new condition. Better condition than the average new guitar hanging in GC.

I recommend buying used you get more for your money.

MIM is great, Squiers are excellent as well if you're cash strapped.

I played a squier classic vibe the other day at Best Buy and I have to say, I like the way it played. BUT, comparing it's sound to the other guitars I was playing that day, the sound of it was very thin. The Standard American blew it away with a fuller sound. I was playing through the same amp on the same settings, so, it may could be adjusted for, but I'm thinking the electrics or maybe materials gave it a more thin sound. I'm not into thin or twangy. I suppose you could replace the pups on a squier, but I think I'd rather go with a mexican before one of those. I have 750 saved right now. But, I would like to be able to afford an audio interface with that. So, we'll see. But Christmas is coming and extra money usually goes for other peoples presents when you have kids and a family.
