I've been searching for an electric for myself. I only have an acoustic right now, I've had it for over 15 years. But a long time ago I sold all my stuff after realizing I wasn't going to be a rock star. Hehehehe. But now I've been playing a LOT more and am desiring a decent electric. I kind of kick myself about the guitars I sold, but actually the last tele I had I wouldn't necessarily like that color right now anyways. (That candy apple red type)

Anyways, I like teles BUT, they can be kind of twangy, and I don't want twangy. So I've been looking for something else, but I like the way the play and the way they are set up. So I went into Best Buy on Saturday (it was after all the good guitar stores were closed because I was at a conference) and played some plugged into a Fender amp.

I have to say that the American Standard I played wasn't really twangy at all. It was more just a creamy, clean sound that I liked. I mean it had a tinge of twang but it wasn't anything that would've detracked me. I didn't like how it played as much or looks too. It was a really super light grey. Plus, I want vintage frets, I think. Otherwise, I totally liked the sound. I compared it to other models. I played a 72 RI Deluxe with the 2 WR buckers and I think that one actually had more twang than the American Standard. At least on the bridge pickup. Not so much on the neck. Then I played a Squier Classic vibe tele, which I actually liked the way it played, but you could just tell the electrics or whatever it was, was so much more "twangy", or thin sounding in comparison.

I also played a Highway one model and hated it. Although the guitars there were not set up properly. At all. There were a couple that were OK, and had they been I would've had a better feel for the different models. But they Highway one had about an inch between the strings and the frets. So it was hard to judge. Plus, the frets are just too large for me on that model. I don't know if it uses jumbo or what.

It's kind of annoying playing guitars at these places. Some of the strings on a few of them had like dirt hanging on them. It was disgusting.

But the point of all this was that it was almost bizarre how big a difference there was in sound of the ones I played. And that American one was very creamy, nice sounding. They didn't have a Standard Mexican, which I wish so much they would have so I could see if there was much of a difference. Because I've played some and actually liked how they felt at other stores.

Am I crazy about the american's sound?

Not at all, they sound great! I compared the MIM Std Tele to an Am Std Ash, and the Am was a better and smoother sounding. And the finish, feel and setup on the Am was great also. I went with the Am. :D

So are the pups and electrics different than the mexican made ones? You would think they'd be the same. Now the Squier's are probably made oversees I'm guessing, so I would imagine they'd be different. But maybe they use varying qualities for each model. But the Mexican standard says it uses the "Hot Tele" Pups which I thought that's what the American Standard says also. On the website anyways.

They have different pickups. The Am Std Tele has Alnico 5, "American Tele" pickups, and the Mex Std Tele has Alnico 3 "Hot Tele" pickups. You can really hear the difference between the two. :)

I wonder if I bought used or a mexican, if I could get those pick ups. I'm assuming yes. And btw, that is a sharp tele. I had a mexican in those colors a LONG time ago. Actually I think that was the last color I had. Not the candy apple. I don't really remember. It's kind of a blur and I don't have pics.

But that is sharp. I want a rosewood neck this time around I'm pretty sure, which the mexican standard doesn't come in. So.....

I have an '08 American Standard Tele and I love it. It does sound really nice. The tone is definately what sold me on it.

Sorry my pic isn't as nice as the other one posted here. I'm a terrible photographer and I just have the camera on my phone. Anyways... You get the point.

Thanks :)

One thing I've noticed is that it seems to sound great no matter what settings I use. It has a really broad range of tones. I don't think I've played a more versatile guitar.

May be late to this one but I don't think you'll go wrong with the American Standard. I wasn't very hot on getting a tele...right up until the time I tried one. It just sounded really good. Though I thought it was a bit twangy (which I actually like), when I put on pure nickel 10s it warmed it up just a little, but still left it distinctive.

At the price you can get them for, they have to be one of the best values out there.

Something about the Tele makes it 1 of my faves now...seems I reach for it all the time now.

So the strings changed the twang, eh? I'm not crazy about too much twang obviously. But I played one just like yours in a store, and it didn't sound twangy to me at all. At least the neck pup didn't. Some twang in the bridge is to be expected on almost any guitar. Well, lots of guitars. But I LOVED the tone on that one you got. I think the American pups do something for it. When I get a guitar, I'm going to put .11's on it. I just like them. I don't know what that will do for twang though.

I like that color much better in the lighting you show it in. Maybe it was them halogen lights that made me not like it. I like the lighter colors actually. But the one at Best Buy was set up terribly. Way too high. And it suffered from what some of these stores do, too much handling by everybody. All greasy and sticky feeling. YUCK!

Yeah, I was at the Best Buy near me and I picked up a Taylor solid body (keep in mind, this guitar is 3 grand) and there were dead spots on the neck! I told the kid there and he said with a set-up and neck adjustment, it would get rid of the dead spots, to which I replied, "so I wanna sink 3 grand into a guitar I'm gonna have to fix?" The kid kept the guitar behind the counter. I guess it's truly not a music store, so I can't hold them to too high a standard:)

And, yes, I love the Tele sound. It's simple yet completely versatile. You cannot go wrong

I'm so ready to find the one. Mexi? Or american? Spend the money, settle for good enough if I find the right one. I've been really trying to get to this certain store I used to deal with a long time ago, and my hours of availability isn't matching with theirs yet. I may go tomorrow though!

What's your budget look like? That's a big factor.
