Just received my first Tele; an American Standard. A beautiful looking and playing guitar. Unfortunately, two strings don't tune correctly.

The A string pulls sharp from the first fret up through the fifth after which it is in pitch. The low (by pitch) E string pulls sharp up through the 7th fret after which it is also in pitch.

I assume the issue is that the nut is too high for these strings. Assuming that's what it is, is this something I can tinker with (inspite of the fact that I'm a bit of a neophyte)?

The guitar came to me through Musician's Friend so there's no retail support. I have a message into tech support, but any insights would be appreciated.

Did you set the intonation on the guitar. Usually new guitars will need some adjustment. If you tune the open string to pitch and then see if the fretted note at the 12th fret is in tune. If the fretted note is sharp or flat you need to adjust the length of the string by turning the screw at the rear of the saddle. I added a link to instructions for setting intonation.

Here is the setup guide for Telecasters.

Hope this helps, it's pretty easy to do...

Actually, intonation for all six strings is very good right out of the box. Even the two low strings that pull sharp; they're spot on up the fretboard, but pull quite sharp for the first 5-7 frets. So I don't think it's a traditional intonation issue. Either it's something with the nut, the individual frets, or possibly the neck itself, though I'm guessing the nut?

Yeah, I should have read your original post a little more carefully - sorry:oops: . I don't know that much about the issue you're having. I guess it could be the nut. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will chime in.

AS Kong said it seems that the problem may be in the nut and the strings aren't seating properly in the nut and probably not in contact with the whole slot, most likely just touching the part of the nut closest to the string posts since they're going sharp.
