So, in 2008 I bought what was supposed to be an '08 American Deluxe Ash Tele in aged cherry sunburst from Guitar Center (they charged me for Ash). Recently, while looking for the neck spec in the 2008 Fender catalog, I saw that in 2008 the Ash body only came in blonde and two-tone sunburst finishes with U-shaped vintage tint necks.

I think I remeber that in 2008 I was able to find my guitar with the cherry sunburst and maple c-shaped neck online and at the Fender site listed as being available in Ash, but now I cannot find any reference anywhere that this is anything other than an Alder bodied guitar. Based on serial number it is an '08 American Deluxe (DZ8).

Anyone have any information on this one way or the other? I assume that it is an Alder body and that it was misrepresented by an unknowlegdable salesperson at GC (of course, my own lack of knowledge puts me ultimitely at fault).

Thanks,

Marc

Might have to call Fender to find out for sure. Either way there should not have been much of an up charge for ash. On a new 2010, there is only $100 difference between alder and ash. $1700 and $1800 respectively. 6% ish?

Either way you have got yourself a premium American made guitar. I just took delivery of a Blond American Deluxe Tele Ash. Action perfect. Playability, tone, sustain, etc., excellent. Cant tell a bit of difference between it and the alder other than looks.

I play it through a 65 Deluxe Reverb RI. My fingers are bleeding and ears ringing. Can't put it down! I know I will eventually, but it may be a while before I pick up my beloved Strat.

You can search for fender price lists on-line. From 2005-2009, no Telecaster Deluxe Ash in aged cherry burst.

They do appear in 2003...

Ripped off is a harsh comment, it could be they made an honest error.

Ash and Alder are quite different in appearance, and since it is a transparent color, you should be able to tell.

Alder body.....

Yeah, but you expect to get what you pay for. It is a beautiful and great sounding guitar either way.

I am not sure of the difference in the pics you posted other than direction of grain and mine is uni-directional like the alder body; is this what I should look for or something else?

I did check the pricelist and catalog also and did not see an ash bodied Am Deluxe in this color.

If it truly has you upset, take the guitar to a guitar tech and verify just what it is.

if it is not Ash, and they did charge you for it, take the appraisal with your receipt to GC and talk to the manager and tell them that you did not get what you paid from and you would want a refund for the difference or the correct guitar you paid for.

They do not have a leg to stand on if it came to a court case, most likely that will want to give a store credit, I would pass on that for cash back.

No offence, but it has been two years. I wouldn't expect anything from Guitar Center. Below is a pic of my 2010 Am Dlx in Ash (Butterscotch Blonde) and you can see the grain very clearly. The direction of the grain is fairly straight. The difference is in the weight and the type of grain. To me the lines in ash are always thicker than in alder, I will put my 2010 American Standard below, it is Alder.

I hope that helps,

as a former employee of guitar center, If you live close to the guitar center that you bought it from, go there and ask them to look up the receipt and they can check their inventory and see what got shipped to them... also the manager is always a safe bet... they go out of their way to find these things out for you... keep rockin' man :D

Hi dodgerpuppy,

You should really post a pic or two and we could help you identify it better. The Ash grain is usually more pronounced and the dark parts are thicker than the Alder. The Alder grain is usually "plainer" looking and less grainy. Here are pics of my Ash '09 Am Std. :)

I think your posting title is a little over the top.

No pictures, no complete serial number for reference, no obvious action on your own part to speak of (like calling Fender and asking their customer service folks to reference the serial number).

Your sales reciept should have the model and serial number right on it.

Their inventory sales system should only have allowed them to charge you for the model number on that guitar unless there's an actual upcharge of somekind on your statement?

Yes, take your reciept back to GC and have them do a lookup on it in their system. Make it fun like your doing research.

Although I've felt GC to be a little big boxish by design, I have gotten some incredible deals from them through the years. Not so much though since they were bought by cerberus a couple years or so ago.

Aged Cherry Burst is Ash. Always has been.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hi dodgerpuppy
Shoot me a serial number and I'll be glad to look it up and verify one way or the other.
Cheers,
rob
