Just fishing for opinions from anyone who owns or has owned a Custom Telecaster FMT. Bought one because there seems to be very few out there. Is this particular tele in the process of being discontinued? Granted, because of the Seymore Duncans it doesn't sound like a typical tele but that was not unexpected. It seems to me (and this is just a reflection of playing Fenders for years) that it is almost too delicate. I've seen it compared to SG's but I would never, ever compare Fender to Gibson (I'm trying to remain polite to those who own those over-priced, poorly finished instruments). I find the FMT closer to a PRS-SE Custom (but I'm not going there). I'm on the fence here and within the 45 day M.F. return period. I know it fundamentally boils down to my taste, but I would like to hear from other FMT owners out there. Any comments? Thanks for your time, the prof.

I dig mine - I have the spalted maple version. I have several Gibsons, and I would say sonically it's closer to an SG simply because of the fact that it's mahogany and close to an SG weight-wise.

I'm not a fan of the Pearly Gates+ bridge pickup, it's a little harsh for me, so I've replaced them with SD AlnicoIIs. I have a set of DiMarzio 36th Anniversary pups on order I'll put in; those are my favorite Les Paul pups. But the pickups are a matter of taste.

The overall build quality is excellent (mine is a Korean version), with the split coils you can cover a lot of ground with it. The neck pocket is to die for. I understand that the Korean ones were made at the same factory as Schecters, and it does have the same build vibe - thick clear coat, highly buffed, excellent workmanship. Slight arched top, a little scooped on the back.

The fretboard is very flat (~16'' radius), and the neck is fairly shallow. I usually hate Ibanez-type profiles, but I actually like this one. It balances very well, hangs nicely, and is surprisingly light. Fantastic gigging guitar, that's why I upgraded the pups.

Overall, I think they are a great value, highly recommended.

Here's mine, playing wirelessly behind the bar last New Year's Eve:

as of this moment, the reason i intend to keep it is because everytime i exchange or sell a fender (ostensibly to keep getting a better tele with each move) it comes back to bite me. i shoulda kept it, actually, horror of horrors saved some money each week and then months or a year later buy another one and another one and hey, do i really need to explain it. like we actually save money! i've yet to find a guitarist who saves money. we don't want the economy to stagnate do we? and another thing - this about folks who constantly feel the urge to review guitars on retail sites. go read some. i don't know whether to laugh or to cry. so what if they have to make an adjustment because it wasn't perfectly set up at the factory. so what if a string popped during shipment. god forbid if they have to take a penny to a tune o'matic bridge and raise or lower it 1 gazillionith of a turn. does that minutia make a whoe line of guitars sink or swim? listening to some reviewers, we are left with the impression that it does. and youtube. i went on there a couple of times to try to actually hear the effects produced by a pedal or effects box. and what do i hear? with rare exceptions people talking about themselves for 15 minutes, then turning the effect on and hitting a note that rings for 5 seconds or the strum of a chord. zappa had it right when he told us to shut up and play our guitars. at least on the fender forums we don't have the constant masturbation. we actually do share decent stuff with each other. and most of us do it in a fun and funny way. it seems that we actually enjoy playing our fenders and other players enjoy, going by their comments, the wacky things we find ourselves doing. so, with a healthy lack of hubris, let's keep having fun and leave the serious stuff for those poor souls who spend way, way too much on their gibbies so they can imagine themselves as Pagey (who spent a hell of alot of time playing Fenders both in the studio and on stage while fans and later the music press went ooo! and ahh! when he wrestled to get the "perfect" balance of light and shade with that perfectly goofy 2 necked thing he sometimes used. what the hell is perfection anyway? and what place does it have in music anyway? so let's have fun with our Fenders - we made the better choices about what brand we wanted around our necks or in our laps. FUN. that's what all this should be about! prof
