OK, so I think I'll make the move to an American Standard. I love the look of the Sunbursts, but I noticed that the three tone is in Alder only and the two tone is in Ash only. I have a Carvin in swamp ash and it sounds great, a little heavy but no big deal. Anyone have an alder body? Is there any big sound difference?

If I were in your shoes, I would go for the Hwy1 Texas. Sweet sound, nitro finish, vintage looks, and if it should matter, made in the US.

I agree that the Baja Tele is a very good guitar. I personally like the Nitro finish, so I too would go with a Hwy 1 Tele. Great guitar.

Oh man, you asked the "which guitar should I get" question. That's going to yield about 20 different answers all telling you to go a different direction.

My advice would be to try and play them before you buy (if that's possible). The American Standards are excellent (I own one in Crimson Red Transparent), but they do have a tone all their own. The '52, while legendary, has a very different neck on it - both the size and the finish. My buddy has one and I picked it up and was like, "whoa" - I'm very used to satin backed necks and the '52 is very sticky and not smooth at all (especially when they're new). I'm not saying it's bad, it's just different and would take some getting used to. You couldn't have two guitars that were more polar opposite than the Am Std and the '52.

The HWY1 are nice guitars (I own a Strat), but again, their specs are different. Jumbo frets, alnico III pickups, satin finish, etc. Some guys love the feel of the jumbo frets, other guys hate them.

So, look around to try out stuff in your price range and decide what's best for you in terms of tone and feel. Yes, you can mod this or that, but if your ceiling is $1000, do you really want to have to look at dumping another $150 into it for new pickups right off the bat?

If you're patient, then watch the used market in your area. Yes, USA made guitars hold their value better, but they still sell for about 60-70% of new price.

Great points, man. I know what you mean by buying something and then having to switch out parts. I have a 2004 HWY 1 strat and never did like the pickups so I put in Kinmans and it sounds great - $200.00 dollars later. I definatly don't want to have to do that when I buy my first tele. The only place near me is a Guitar Center, so I may have to stop in and see what they have Tele-wise and play them. I might just get lucky and find the right one. I've had pretty good luck with Sweetwater, I like that they take the time to check out every guitar and set it up before they ship it.

Which Kinmans did you put in the Hwy 1? IMO Kinmans are the best pups out there.

I put in Woodstock 2's. I bought the prewired set, when you pop up the second tone control, it turns you're bridge and bridge middle into a great P-90 sound.

You may also want to look at the American Special as well. it is priced at $799 and if beautiful... Lots of nice touches on that guitar... Like Greasebucket tone circuit.
