hi just a question, i bought a 2005 black fender telecaster american made in 2007 the store said it was brand new and charged me full price, a while after i had it i noticed some imperfections on the top edge, the finnish is very bumpy and jagged not smooth like the rest, it runs in a strip along the top edge that would be closest to your body when you play. at first it did not bother me but now it's driving me crazy! and i'm wondering if there is a way to fix it, they best way to discribe it is as if someone sprinkled sand on it then painted over it. any help would be very welcome

Can you post a pic?

Please be more specific other than 'American made' since that will determine what the finish it is. In 2005, Highway 1's had an acrylic lacquer, American Series and American Deluxe has polyurethane finish, and American Vintage reissue has nitro finish. All these finishes react differently to what you expose them to.

ok it's an american series it has a black finnish and i will try to post pic asap it is solid black(white pic guard) and will be hard to photograph but i will try, i ran the serial number and it was made in 2005 the neck has the 60th anivercery round dime size medalion, z504 serial number, when i bought it it was sold to me as new i have taken great care of it since i brought it home has not left the house and has not been exposed to anything unusual i have the fender guitar care kit and i wipe it down often, this finnish problem was there from the time i brought it home i noticed it after a few days, its on the back edge of the guitar not on front or back and only visable from the top, it looks almost like sandpaper that has been painted but its just finnish i think and at one point it looks like it has a hair shaped piece of something in the finnish and its really rough to the touch and the wrest of the body is totally smooth (normal) i love my guitar and love tele's and i just want to get it fixed if possible, my concern is that it may have been repaired by the store i bought it from, also the hardshell case that came with it is a little warped again since i bought it, i guess the other thing on my mind is if it came from the factory like this would not the guitar store send it back? they mentioned nothing to me when i bought it, i guess i could have taken it back when i noticed this but it was my first tele and i fell in love with it right away. it is just bugging me to know what is actually going on with my baby, p.s how do i post a pic i'm new here

Sorry to hear about this blemish on your otherwise great Tele.

The poly finish on the American Series (and now American Standard) is the thoughest finish Fender USA uses. So it shouldn't have reacted to anything in the case or while you were using it like what can happen to nitro. Sounds like it might have happened at the factory??? Fender warranty might cover you if it is a really bad problem. Maybe contact Fender customer service.

Maybe it can easliy be buffed out by a luthier? A pic would maybe help figure it out. See how to post pics in the FAQ button above.

well finally a follow up and it's not great news :( i took my guitar to an authorized fender repair shop for a set up and to have them look at the blemish, i was told that it was "a rare imperfection from the factory" and that "the paint had run" they also said that since it is on the very edge it would be very hard to fix, he took it into the back and tried to buff it out, when he came back it was much better except that at the worst spot of the imperfection the buffing had taken the paint off and now a bit of the wood is exposed and this is way more noticeable then it was before, so i guess it is now worse, i know it's just a guitar but i love my guitar and this is now making me crazy and they said it would be impossible to match the paint  so at this point i'm looking for any solution anyone might have, can fender do anything for me? i don't mind paying to have it fixed but i don't want a patch job and i want it not to be noticeable, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Return it if it bothers you.
And no, taking paint off is not fender authorized servicing.
I'd get another, were it me.
