I just bought a Fender Standard MIM Tele today from GC. I wanted to make a small truss rod tweak but low and behold there is nothng in the headstock other than a smooth round piece of metal. There is nothing for an allen wrench to catch against and adjust. I called the guy I bought it from at GC and he said that on the MIM Teles the adjustment is located at the base of the neck and that you have to loosen the neck.

Is this correct? I really don't want to loosen the neck if I don't have to.

Unless they have changed since last year the truss rod adjustment should be at the headstock end. That's where mine is.

Oh boy that doesn't surprise me ! Another wiz kid from GC

I don't think on a Standard Series. The Classic Series are like that though. If in fact you had one with the truss rod screw in the heal of the neck, there sure the heck wouldn't be a hole cut in the headstock !!

Can you peak down in there with a flashlight ? The Allen wench that came with it should be the ticket.

I don't know why this GC guy would say you would have to loosen the neck to get at the screw..........if it was in the heal. But then again he doesn't sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Sometimes it is better to insert the long end of the wrench in so you can turn it more to line it up, then tweek it with a pliers. Opposite of this pic.
3/16 HEX

Oh and HNGD !!!

Be sure the allen key fit tigh in screw hole (allen head) . Fender give cheap allen key and you can damage your allen head.

Buy a American made which it fit tigh.

If you have to tighten your allen head, slack it before 1/8 turn, and tighten a little bit, slack little bit.
There,s often wood dust betwenn bolt and nut in trust rod and you could damage it if you go too fast

Good points.

Another thing I forgot to mention.

NEVER EVER tighten the truss rod with the strings tuned to pitch !

Just to make it easier to get back into tune, count how many times you spin the machine ( like half turns). Usually 3 - 4 1/2 times depending on the string is good enough.

Don't expect INSTANT results. Re-tune and let the guitar sit (or use it) for a day or two and then recheck. It takes time for the rod tension and wood to get on the "same sheet of music".

I don't even monkey with a new guitar for a month so it acclimates to my temp/climate/humidity.

Thanks everyone. I tried all my Allen wrenches but did not have a 3/16. Went back to GC and they found one for me. All is well now. She plays like a dream.

Make sure the allen wrench fit tight. Most of allen we find around ,give by Fender or in guitar store are too loose.
Trust rod adjustments is easy if;
1- You have the right tool
2- You take your time
