Hi, I'm new to the forum, because after a 15 year hiatus, I'm back playing again. I've been lurking here a lot, but don't post much.

I bought my 52 Tele re-issue used in 1991 from Real Guitars in San Francisco. It was a consignment sale, and no paperwork was included. A guitar tech said it had DiMarzio pickups. I don't know if that's true or Fender installed them or of the prior owner switched them out.

I have no plans to pull the neck to check the S/N. Didn't Fender start making the re-issues in the late 80"s? Can anyone provide any info or history on my guitar? Are they they built the same as the current 52's. Thanks a bunch.

I have a 52 Ri as well, the serial number should be on the bridge plate under the pickup, stamped in the metal under 'Fender' it should be 5 or six digits, (visible without taking apart on the top) and you can look up number on Fender site.

The pickups on the guitar are made by fender unless they were replaced later. The factory ones are pretty weak by todays standards. The guitar was originally shipped with a old style case, strap, modern six-saddle bridge, old school grey 8-ft cable, instructions, a capicator and instructions for upgrading the wiring to modern tele specs.

They are generally great guitars, one-piece premium bodies with a 7.25 radius neck. Mine is 6.3 lbs. (Very Light)

Nice lookin' Tele!!!

The previous owner put the Dimarzio pickups in. Fender never made the '52 reissue with anything but reissue pickups (modern pickups would defeat the purpose of Fender calling it a 'vintage reissue').

Fender started producing the vintage reissues in 1982.

As telecasterific pointed out the serial number is stamped on the bridge. By 'history' of the guitar I assume you want to know when it was made? Either you pull the neck and look at the date stamp, OR call or email Fender customer service with the serial number and ask them. See here: http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php
4 digits stamped on bridge plate U.S. '52 Vintage Telecaster 1982-1988 (Check neck date for specific year)
5 digits stamped on bridge plate U.S. '52 Vintage Telecaster 1988-present (Check neck date for specific year)

There have only been VERY slight changes to the '52 RI since 1982 and today such as color of the butterscoth laqcuer (some years are more yellow or orange than others), Fender stopped sending COA's a couple of years ago with the reissues, the first couple of years of reissues had some tiny little detail regarding the body route that wasn't 100% vintage correct ( I forgot what it was, maybe someone in the know can chime in). But the point is the '52 reissues haven't really changed over the years.
