On my '52:

Position 1 --> Neck pick-up with a 100nF // given a very low pass filter (for jazz for instance) volume potentiometer but no action for the tone potentiometer
Position 2 --> Neck pick-up with volume and tone potentiometer
Position 3 --> Bridge pick-up with volume and tone potentiometer

The wiring can be upgraded to reflect later "current wiring"

Position 1 --> Neck pick-up
Position 2 --> Neck pick-up and Bridge pick-up
Position 3 --> Bridge pick-up
All positions with volume and tone potentiometer

Typical 50s wiring, at least in a Gibson (& as described in that Strat link), takes the input to the tone pot/cap circuit from the output of the volume pot (signal to output jack) instead of the input (from the PUPs).

The idea is to dump the treble from the supposedly smaller output signal instead of the full PUP input signal. I.E. Let's say your volume is on 7, your tone circuit is affecting only 70% of the signal instead of 100%, so comparatively a smaller percentage of treble is sent to ground.

On an Am Stndrd Tele, as pictured in Fender's wiring Diagram, this would be accomplished by moving the volume-pot-end of the wire that connects the volume pot to the tone pot from the 3-way/input (outer) lug to the output jack (center) lug.
