Hey Lee,

I have not played through the N3, but I have through last years. I have heard great things about the N3's. Have you had a chance to play the?

Don,

I have played through the N3's but not in a setting where I could really hear them. The Guitar Center in Columbus, Ohio had two 2010 Am. Deluxe Strats (one HSS and one SSS) and I played through them. Not quite the same sound as a Telecaster though. I also played through a "2009" American Deluxe Telecaster that had the N3's at a Sam Ash. It was a Cherryburst with maple fretboard and supposedly had all the new features of the 2010's (kind of strange if you ask me). Once again, I didn't want to crank the amp up so I played at a very low setting. I also played the Telecaster before I planned on buying one so I didn't really explore the sound. Out of all the online demos they sounded really good though.

Hello Lee,

I got the unexpected call today. I went down and watched the unboxing. Gorgeous! They started a quick set up and the neck pick up was DOA. UGGGG. It has to go back!

I did play it it acoustically and with the bridge. It is so sweet. This will make the extra wait even more painful. Here is a quick pick I snapped.

Don!

What are they doing to you man!!! I'm really sorry to hear the bad news. Are they fixing that one or sending you a new one? And when? I will say that I've read a couple horror stories with the 2010's making it through QC with various issues. What are your thoughts on the bridge pickup and what amp did you play through? On the bright side, the grain on that thing is phenomenal! The SKB case looks great too. I hope there is a quick fix for you. Keep me updated.

Lee,

If you knew how the rest of my day went, it would have made sense that that happened. The grain is incredible and the bridge pick up was very bold but with quite a bit of Twang.

I made it there after normal Fender hours, so we will have to see what happens. Either to a warranty shop or back to Fender. Either way, I am sure it will work out fine, but it did make me want to take it home really bad. Plus I am getting a screaming deal on it.

Lee,

You might not like what I am going to tell you next.

I called Fender this morning, and they assured me everything would be cool. However, around lunch time, I decided to go back to the store, because for the life of me, I couldn't remember the countoured body and neck heel that were in the specs.

I got to the store, and there is no contoured body, no contoured neck heel. To top it off, the neck is not a "C" shape as in the Spec but a "U" shape. Again I called Fender and they stated the specs on the Ash are different, the website must be wrong.

So basically after waiting 3+ months, the guitar has arrived, in a manner that should never have passed QC and with much different specs than the guitar I ordered.

I am really at a loss of words.

Don,

I am at a loss of words as well. As for the "C" shaped neck on the Ash body, most, if not all, of Fender's authorized dealers advertise that incorrect spec. Fender's site does too so that was clearly generated by Fender (even more unacceptable). The "U" shaped neck still has the compound radius right? As for the two contours, I knew the Ash body didn't have them because I recently saw this video below. If you watch right around 42 seconds, you can see a side profile (and the lack of the body contour). I ordered the Alder body, so I had no idea the specs were wrong for the Ash guitars because I just flat out never looked. I hope this video doesn't make you even more upset! This thing sounds GREAT though.

Bad news aside, what are your plans? I know that you said you loved the feel of that guitar and got a good price so are you going to stick it out? Sorry about the news Don.

Hey Lee,

So the Tele was sent to a shop here in San Jose that has been in business since the '20's. Four generations. They are probably 5 miles from my house and I never knew of them. Super knowledgeable. They confirmed it was the pickup, a new one is being sent from Fender.

Because I didn't get to play the guitar for a long time, I had them give it a once over. It does in fact have a "U" neck (different from the specs), however it is radiused 9.5-14. While I would have loved the contours, not a deal killer. I most definitely would have preferred the C neck. When it is finished I am just going to spend half a day with it to see if I am happy with it. If not, I am going to see what Fender can do. I ordered what was on their website, and I feel like they should have delivered what was advertised or make it right.

It is a gorgeous, well made guitar with an issue with a single pickup. I just may have made a different decision had I known about the neck and body.

Hey man, I almost died this year and I look at things differently. I will probably get it, fall in love with it, and forget what I really wanted in about a week.

The only lesson I have learned is I would never order another guitar and wait that long. If I can't hold it prior or have it within a week, then I am not going to wait.

That being said, the dealer gave me 35% off so the price is $1,460. I can't beat that with any other guitar on the market right now. (This is my fourth guitar from them in 3 months, plus I bought a Blues Jr. during that time as well, so they were very flexible). Maybe they will cut me a similar deal on a Natural Standard with Maple Neck and I will feel better ;)

Don,

I highly doubt I will order another guitar too. I think it's definitely in your best interest to at least wait and see how it feels. The hard part, waiting, is mainly over (I wish I could say the same thing) so what do you have to loose? I bet it's going to sound so good (in addition to looking absolutely flawless) you won't have any problem adding it to your collection. Love the pictures and let me know what they work out for you.

Hey Lee,

I stopped by the shop today, and they had two new American Deluxe Strats out that came in with my guitar, so it does look like Fender is catching up.

I hope you get a call soon!

Don,

I was told by Fender that they are expecting a large shipment to Guitar Center by the end of this month. That makes sense, since Guitar Center's website predicts a delivery on September 29th. It's unfortunate I didn't receive mine before the people who can buy and walk home with the guitar the same day they arrive at Guitar Center (since I ordered mine in May), but I kind of expected Fender to only ship full truck load. I guess if I have a problem with mine, they can just grab another one out of the back so I like that security. Anyways, hopefully we'll see some pictures by early October.

I had an American Standard in Rosewood and Maple neck on order since early August. It just arrived today so maybe the situation is improving.
