Thank you for the input!

The thought did a occur to me I could also be on the look out for a regular ole tele and just replace the singe coils with some single coiled sized buckers. I did this to a Bullet a long long time ago and the sound got much fatter and better, IMHO. I think I said this before, but I wish I still had that guitar. It was just different. Which I like. I believed I used Duncans's for that. I remember they were all black with two small metal exposed bars, and I think they were kind of rubbery around those metal things.

My go-to guitar is a MIM tele that came new with a full size humbucker on the neck and standard on the bridge. It is wired for 5 way switching. You can get any sound you want with this guitar due to the switching arrangement.

5 way switching on a tele? That is awesome. How does it work? Is this a thinline model? Do you have pics?

I have a 1973 Thinline with two humbucker pick ups and find i have a surprising array of sounds from which to choose. To tweak the sound, and i mean minor tweaking, I use a Behringer Bass V-Amp. This is a model not just for bass but also for acoustic and electric guitar. The combo gives me anything I want and more, whether I'm playing through a Marshall 100 or a Fender Pro 400 Bass amp. Behringer also makes a V-Amp 3 just for electric guitars. I have both but I find that the Bass V Amp does everything the other does and more. Plug in and let your ears guide the way. When you find yourself grinning ear to ear, you've hit the right combo for you. Personally, I find it impossible not to make a telecaster sound good. So that's my 2 cents.

I have one of these it's my favorite guitar. I have plenty of much more expensive guitars too! Everything about this guitar is awesome. Check it out don't be scared off because it's a import. In my opinion the craftsmanship is better then my american strat.
