Well it's finally happened. After nearly 18months my Tele has finally sustained its first "injury". I was re-arranging my home office / practice space when my Tele slipped off the chair it was on and the headstock hit the ground first. I was mortified. It now has a 2 inch hairline crack between the neck and the skunk stripe so it obviosuly copped a decent impact. The thing that annoys me most is that I can FEEL it when I play it even though it's seems to play fine.

Still I'm pretty peeved...

What kind of hairline crack? Is it just a finish crack or the is it through the wood?

Thanks Nevin. That makes me feel much better... :?

The crack is almost as if the maple has flexed and the wlanut (or whatever the skunk stripe is made of) did not. So its more of a crack along the joint.

That's Okay, if it was a Gibson you would have probably be posting about the headstock falling off.

Man, that sucks, but if it plays fine....no problem, Fenders are pretty stout and can take a punch very well. Just use some 1200 grit sand paper and lightly sand over the cracked area so at least you might not feel it. You may be able to smooth it out enough that it wont bother you. If it is only a small crack at the joint of the two pieces of wood, I wouldn't worry about it. I know players that use guitars with cracks much worse than yours, and you would never know it from listening to them play. :)

At least it wasn't a les paul, the head would have come off.
Take solace in that i guess.

If it was a Les Paul or SG you would have been guitar shopping today. It's usually when people put guitars in "temporary"places that things like this happen.Pete Townshend said in an interview once that the Tele was the sturdiest guitar made-he would certainly know.Try to sand the cracked area with a fine sandpaper and then lightly spray with a clear finish that's compatable with your finish.BTW mask the entire area.

Cheers guys.

Yes it was definately a temporary move. I took it off its stand and placed it on the chair. As I moved the stand to its new location the guitar slipped off the chair. Anyways, life goes on...

The good news is, it's not the end of the world. It's entirely fixable mate. You're lucky that the crack is on the walnut/maple joint. Ususaly the glued joint is the strongest part, as on repaired Les Paul headstocks (JK) .

I suggest you get it reglued soon. You don't want the guitar suffering any extra stress because of a glue joint having failed.
