Last weekend, I picked up a Squier standard Tele (it has "20th anniversary" on the neckplate- 2002?) for $60, and they threw in a Marshall MG-10 amp as well. I don't expect I'll use the amp much, but I've been loving the Tele so far. It plays great, and I'm looking forward to plugging it into my Classic 30 and cranking it.

Still, it's incredible how a pickup swap can change a good instrument into a great one. I'm new to Teles, my other guitars being a Strat copy and a semi-hollowbody. What sorts of pickups do you guys like for classic Telecaster sounds? My favourite Tele player is Roy Buchanan, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily want his icepick-to-the-ear bridge sound. I'm just looking for that that standard open-sounding neck pickup, and a bright, twangy bridge.

Texas Teles would have great tone. "Fender Texas Special Telecaster Pickups are OEM on the James Burton Standard, Merle Haggard Tribute and American Classic Telecasters." :)
