Guitars vary in weight because they are made of wood. Wood varies in weight even from the same tree. Ash can be really heavy or feather light. I had to sort through a few ash bodied Baja Teles at various stores before I found one that was less than 8 pounds. Congrats on getting a light 52RI, I bet it's very resonant and sounds great!

Who knows what wood your HSS Strat is without knowing the model, where it was made, (MIA or MIM) or what it looks like. If it's a solid color or MIM than it's more than likely alder. Many times the type of wood doesn't determine weight since wood is so random.

My 52 RI Tele feels lighter than my 57 RI Strat, and they are also both ash >_> I don't know why it is, maybe there's termites in my tele o_O

My HHS is American Standard 2008 Sienna Sunburst (ash)
I love it, I just could not believe how much heavier it is.
I am so used to it, and I have always known my MIM Strat is a little lighter weight but the MIM is alder.

Anyway I am still shocked, but I am very happy with the 52 RI and the tones are Incredible :D [/img]

That Joe, is a sweet '52! Much envy!!! Wood is a funny thing from guitar to guitar there is so much variation. Glad you got two winners!

I have two Tele's but one is a thinline, so I can't really compare those... However, I have 3 Strats that are all made of alder and the weight varies greatly between the three. My USA Strat is the lightest and from there I have what I would consider an "average" weight MIM and a HEAVY MIM. That said, they all have a sound and resonance all there own - each really nice in their own way. My favorite is the heavy MIM. On the flip side, I used to have a CIJ '72 Tele Custom that was WAY HEAVY, but was kind of dull sounding - almost dead and a pick-up swap didn't help so it must have been a dead piece of wood. Anyway, enjoy the '52! envy.....
