Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could explain preamps in guitars. What they do, how they work (for dummies) and why you might want one? Also any that anybody would recommend?

Im only interested as im always looking for new mods for my tele and heard someone mention them the other day, but never really found out anything about them.

thanks in advance :)

Preamps in guitars are used to boost the signal.

Ive only ever seen them used in accoustics since they with have a little mic inside or a Piezo bridge which requires a boost.

Mind you piezos in electrics just use the 9v battery.

That might be fun to drive a tube amp by turning up the volume on the guitar, rather than stepping on a Tube Screamer pedal or whatever.

A lot of heavy metal players use preamps in their guitars to boost the signal and slam the front end of their amps for more gain. Well, t's not just heavy metal players, because Eric Clapton has a preamp in his signature Strat. Many bass players use built in preamps and active pickups.

I am not a fan of EMG pickups, but they give a little generic explanation of preamps in this link http://www.emginc.com/pages/whyemg if you look past their hyperbole.

I would rather stomp on a good overdrive pedal than bother with adding a preamp and battery to one of my guitars. But you might like the sound and benefits of a preamp. Luckily preamps are getting smaller and cheaper these days so you can try one without routing a big hole in your guitar. Check these out: http://store.guitarfetish.com/onsexcimatou.html

edit: well you still might have to route out for the 9V battery.
