hello people.i'm currently looking for a guitar and i want a telecaster. but i can't decide whether to buy a Standard tele(the ones that are MIM) or get a squire tele. The squire is cheaper and i've heard that the classic vibe one is really good. but then again i want to get my first fender. any one help me decide?

btw are teles good for playing rock/punk?

Go to your local shop and play a few, get whatever feels/sounds best to you.
And if a you really want a standard, why compromise and get a squier?

Also yes teles are pretty good for rock/punk, though if your playing something really heavy you may want to change the pickups.(Another advantage of the standard is that you can put a humbucker in the neck position).

Great advice. We should have an acronym here (not picking on you) that's SUAP. Short for Shut Up and Play.

Seriously though, do not get hung up in other people's comments (sometimes helpful, sometimes not) that this guitar is good only for this, or that one for that.

The guitar adds color, but the player creates the art.

And it you look at the history of rock, Tele's have been *everywhere*.

The Squiers are mostly good value but very basic. That little butterscotch blonde is a great deal. Especially if you want just a carry-around, don't-care-if-it-gets-scratched axe.

The MIM's are a step up in quality, but also price.

Do your research on-line, go down to the local store and play. Take notes! That way you'll remember what you liked or didn't like.

I opted for the MIM Tele when I put my money down.
It was $500 for the Butterscotch Blonde FSR from GC.
I REALLY love this guitar!

But play both and whichever "sings" to you, buy.

As for Punk, Joe Strummer of the Clash, has his own signature Tele.
You can do a lot with this guitar for tone.

Good luck,
-T

Squiers are also routed for humbucker on the neck position.

I'd try the Fender Standard and the Squier Classic Vibes- they are great guitars, don't cost as much, and are, at least, in the same level as the Standard, if not better. Just go to a store and compare, don't mind the name on the headstock, go to a store and play a few. Teles are great guitars for anything you can imagine (except metal, cos them you want something with double humbuckers...)

I have both the Squier Classic Vibe 50's and 60's Tele. I put Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups in both and Fender Schaller Locking Tuners on both and you can side by side them to any American made Tele and you cannot tell the difference. I have been playing for 30 years and I am very picky and I find the top end Squier to be just a few parts away from being a tour worthy go to guitar.

Yes, Teles are good for playing rock, punk, funk, soul, rockabilly or anything else.

The Standard Telecaster (MIM) is a great 'best bang for the buck' guitar, but as mentioned, you should really play a few different ones and decide which is best for YOU.

Good luck!

I have an '04 MIM Tele and it's just quite simply a great guitar and I play mostly classic rock and blues.A lot of the early"punk"players used Teles most notably Chrissie Hynde who was unfortunately lumped in with the punk movement. You can use a Tele for anything just ask Keith Richards if you see him.Don't fall for the swap out the pups on an MIM hype either because they are perfectly good, dare I say great.

The nice thing about Teles is that they're so basic, that it's hard to screw one up. I have a Squier standard, and having played a few much-nicer Teles, I have to say that I can't tell a huge amount of difference. Playability is the same after a good setup, and pickups can always be swapped if necessary.

A good guitar will let you know it's good when you pick it up, play it, feel it and really listen to it. It only has to be "good" for you! Pay no attention to the name on the headstock. You can find some real gems in the Guitar Shop that some won't even bother to look at without USA Fender or Gibson on the headstock and a $2000 price tag. Play the MIM Tele and play the CV Squire - play a bunch of 'em - play anything that catches your eye - it could be something entirely different, but in the end the one that speaks to you is the one you should buy. Have fun with it and good luck!

Go try them both out and see which you like best. The Classic Vibe line is REALLY NICE in my opinion.

I don't know anything about Squire Teles, but SQUIER Telecasters are a great value, and are decent guitars when properly set up.

As far as Teles being good for punk...we all know that in order to be punk you must adhere to a strict set of rules, because abiding by and playing by the rules is what punk is all about...And we all know that the Sex Pistols were punk because they always followed the rules...Punk has nothing to do with doing your own thing and not obeying the rules, so if you wanna do your own thing and not obey the rules, classical guitar is the most rebellious form of music there is... 8)
