Was watching Jeff Beck on Paladia tonight and he was joined by Clapton. Eric was playing that pewter color strat and I started to think how sweet this Tele would look in that color. I checked reranch and alas they do not carry that color, oh well Sherwood Green is nice too...

Of course I would have to go with a maple fretboard in that case ...

I would also be a little concerned going with another paint supplier. Since I use spray bombs (rattle cans) and I was so happy with how the Reranch products worked, I would be reluctant to try another source. I'm going to see what's out there though...

Been a bit embarrassed about my utter lack of progress on this build. Got a tiny bit done today. I drilled the holes for the pickguard and the strap buttons. All of the other holes / cavities were already done on this body.

Here's a couple of pics of how the pickups are mounted to the bridge and pickguard. I always have a hard time with those springs, they usually go flying all over the room.

I mounted the neck and the bridge and taped the pickguard to the body to get the proper placement. I measured so that the control plate is parallel to the bridge.

Image

I marked the holes for the pickguard and the control plate with a pencil. I then used a small nail as a punch to help keep the drill bit in place when I drill the holes. I also marked the holes for the strap buttons and used the nail as a punch to start those holes.

I took everything back off the body and drilled the holes. I use a piece of electrical tape to mark the proper depth on the drill bit. I drilled everything with a hand drill, but I think a drill press may be the preferred method to insure straight holes. Here is a shot of the punch holes, and the drill bit with the depth marker.

Later this week I plan to do some sanding and then do the grain filling process.

Hey Kong, cool body. I like the dark neck mounted, looks cool with the rosewood and the pearl knobs & bucker. Very classy.

thumbs up!

A bit more progress this evening...

I filled the knots with Mighty Putty last night. Tonight I sanded it back and here are the results before and after.

I also did some sanding on the entire body yesterday and smoothed out the edges. After I sanded back the Mighty Putty, I went over the body lightly with mineral spirits.

I let it dry for a little while and then I figured it was ready for my version of grain filling. I used the product in the picture which is supposedly designed for wood floors. It worked well enough on my Strat so I'm using it again. I used the plastic putty knife with the blue tape on it to smooth the filler into the grain. I worked across the grain towards myself. I was pretty sloppy with this application, but I'm not worried as it sands off easily enough. I was sloppy with this step on my last build and it didn't hurt the end product. I'll let it sit over night and sand it back with 220 and then 320 tomorrow evening. If all goes well it will be ready for sanding sealer next.

OK, I'll show my ignorance...
Why did you fill up the holes you just drilled?
:?

Actually a good question, not ignorant at all. I use grain filler to fill in the pores of the wood. I'll clean the holes out again after I sand most of the filler back off. Usually you will be able to clean out the holes with a drill bit held between the fingers. I tried not to cram too much grain filler in the holes.

The point of this step is to build a perfectly smooth surface to put the finish on. I'll sand the whole body again, clean out the holes with a drill bit, and then apply 2 coats of clear sanding sealer. When you sand down the sanding sealer, the body becomes smooth almost like glass. That will be the surface that I apply my primer to.

I'm pretty sure that it is best to drill the holes first and clean them out when necessary. I think if you apply all the finish first, you risk damaging the finish when you drill the holes. I'm pretty new to this so other more experienced builders can chime in.

Looking good kong :)

It's weird, it's like we've seen this before, but it's better the second time through :) It's like the opposite of Planet of the Apes with Marky Mark. Thats a good thing :D
