Andy I think I like the push/pull pot option, and keeping the traditional look. As far as which coil of the humbucker to use; not sure which would be best. Is there much tonal difference between using the lower coil vs. the upper? Thanks in advance for the help with this. I can't wait to get started. I've got my neck, bridge pickup and body. I just need the hardware, wiring harness, neck pickup and I'm all set. Waiting just a bit for the humidity to drop before I start finishing. This thing is going to be cool and I hope it will be a real player too. I have visions of this being my main guitar.

Hi Kong,

No problem dude!

To be honest there is very little difference between the two once split. I suppose seeing as a Tele doesn't have a middle pup maybe the lower coil? Up to you.

Bar the Humbucker push/pull, will you be going for standard Tele wiring?

When your ready give me a shout and i'll draw a diagram if you need it.

Enjoy!

Andy

That sounds like the ticket. I like the way you think. We'll go with the lower coil and yes otherwise standard wiring job. I definitely could use a diagram when the time comes. From what I understand 500K pots are preferable for a humbucker.

thanks again!

I am glad Andy posted about this thread...as I do not get over to the Tele side of the Forum much. KONG looks like he has a great start here. I eagerly look forward to his finished project. I always admire the guys who start with bare bones wood!

I guess my forte is wiring. Over the years I have done a lot of Tele wiring and love messing with the bodies Jason is talking about with 3 pickups and beveled front and back like a Strat. Here are few examples of Teles done:
Image Image Image Image

The Graffiti Yellow one had a lot going on inside with a 500k Push/Pull Pot which is set up for coil splitting on the neck mini--humbucker. (Seymour Duncan Little 59) and the MIDDLE pickup is a Van Zant Vintage Blues single coil reverse wound/reverse polarity and the BRIDGE pickup is a FENDER 50’s CUSTOM SHOP. Cramming the custom wiring into a Tele like this can be quite a feat. There is the TBX tone control for the bridge and middle pickups. The neck tone control is a push/pull pot that "taps" off the humbucker, giving more of a vinatge Tele sound.

Here is one other one I did a few years ago which has a 3 way rotary switch giving one a tone of switching options

Xhefri,

Thanks for sharing. I always admire your work. Your wiring always looks so damn tidy. Those are some fine Teles you've built there. All four look like amazing pieces of work. 8)

Alas, another one! (build thread I mean)

I love the humbucker/SC split idea, been on my mind for a while now. Should give you some sweet warm neck sounds! Cool.

Already addicted,

The Nutter

I don't want everyone to think I'm slacking on my build. I've ordered the rest of parts I'll need and I'll begin actual work when they all arrive. Since this is my second build, and I felt I was a bit disorganized on my first build, I've decided to list the parts and steps I'll be taking on the build. Hopefully this will help this project to move along more smoothly than my last one (even though I was really happy with the final results). I'm hoping this more orderly approach will also help me do a better job documenting my progress.

Here are the parts I have:
Body, Neck, Tuners, and Bridge Pickup

Here is what is on order
Neck Plate & Screws
Strap Buttons & Screws
String Ferules
Bridge and Saddles
Control Plate & Knobs
Pickguard & Screws
Neck Pickup (Humbucker)
Bridge Pickup Mounting Screws
Electronics:
Pots / Caps / Switch / Jack / Jack cup

I'll also be using the following finishing supplies - most of which are left over from my last project:

Mighty Putty for the Knot on the body
Grain Filler
Sanding Sealer
Re-Ranch White Primer
Re-Ranch Lacquer – SHERWOOD GREEN
Will also need clear gloss lacquer for top coats. I'll buy either Re-Ranch or Deft, I have not decided yet, but Deft worked very well on the Strat.
220, 320, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper
Finishing Compound - Perfect It and Finesse It
buffer cloths

Here are the actual basic steps I plan to follow & document on this project:

MARK OUT HOLES FOR PICKGUARD & STRAP BUTTONS
DRILL HOLES WITH DRILL PRESS
FILL KNOT WITH MIGHTY PUTTY
SAND WHOLE BODY WITH 220
GRAIN FILL BODY
SEAL BODY WITH SANDING SEALER 2 COATS X 2
SAND DOWN WITH 320
MAKE JIG OR BLOCKS to suspend body for spraying
SPRAY BODY WITH PRIMER – LIGHTLY SAND WHEN DRY
SPRAY COLOR COATS
LOCK METALLIC COAT WITH 4 LIGHT CLEAR COATS
SPRAY CLEAR COATS (3 – 4 CANS OF CLEAR GLOSS)
3 COATS PER DAY 1-2 HOURS BETWEEN COATS
LET BODY CURE 30 – 40 DAYS
WET SAND 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000
POLISH WITH BUFFER – PERFECT IT / FINESSE IT
HAND POLISH WITH HAND GLAZE
FINAL ASSEMBLY & WIRE ELECTRONICS
SET ACTION / INTONATION / TRUSS ROD / PICKUP HEIGHT

Great choices kong (like you'd make a bad choice ;)).

However I did think you'd go with the pearloid pickguard to match the pickup. Was it a bit too over-the-top to think about?
