You must have that ESPN thing ...since I was just thinking about this build this morning and wondering how it was progressing???

Bummer about the wait but...glad it's progressing...

Have a great New Year!

Maybe your neighbors should be more understanding and deal with the fumes, so you can get that fine axe in working order... You must've just gotten hit w/ snow right? That's rough. But now I, as well as you, have something to look forward to in the New Year. Best wishes

Update: Got the final clear coats sprayed on Wednesday, 1/5. I'll probably start sanding and polishing around 2/20. I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

The body was nicely cured so I decided to sand and polish today. It is all shined up and wired up. I just have to add strings and do a setup. Here are a few teaser pics. I'll get some sound clips up this week.

Kong, what a perfect pair!

It seems like this tele was less than the labour of love the strat build was (is that fair to say, correct me if I'm wrong). But still, proof is in the pudding and your excellent workmanship is shining through again. Fantastic work my man, I wonder what alcoholic beverage you relaxed with when you finished this one up?

Dan

Thanks for the compliments guys. I really worked hard on getting it to look good. I sanded for over 6 hours yesterday, buffing took about an hour. I really am happy with how pretty it is. Here is a pic of the finished axe.

I did string her up last night and when I was setting it up I found that it needed a truss rod adjustment (had too much relief). The adjustment is at the heel which is a bit of a pain, but I wanted that 60s vibe so...

I also found out that the pickups had different polarity so today after I adjusted the truss rod, I reversed the green and black wire on the humbucker. I could not reverse the bridge pickup because the black wire has to be the ground. That took care of the phase issue. I plugged it in and to be honest it sounds decent at best. I think it may be an electronics issue, I'm not sure if the humbucker is causing issues. It is pretty noisy and I'm not sure if I should have grounded the 2 pots together. Or maybe try a different capacitor? What do you think, Andybighair?

If I can't get it to work with the humbucker, I may just have to go with a traditional Tele setup.

Howdy Kong,

Humm... I've just double checked my wiring diagram against Fenders regarding grounding and It should be all good. Its been a few years since I worked on a Tele (pup swap and 4 way mod) and I can't for the life of me remember if it had a bridge and body ground. No mention of either on Fender's diagrams....

Can you double check the wiring against your other Tele to make sure? Just ignore the push/pull part and check out the Jack to make sure nothings grounding out.

Bed time over my way but tomorrow I'll give this my full attention. In the mean time PM Martian. I reckon he'll know the score. :D

Andy

(Man, that Tele looks good!)

Thanks Dan,

You're perceptive, I didn't enjoy building this one as much as the Strat. I did take a long time to put it all together, and on the whole, I'd much rather play 'em than build 'em. With that being said, I am extremely proud of how this came out, especially as this is only my second try at a spray finish. I didn't have a drink because it was a work night, but this weekend I'll sip some Red Stag Bourbon in honor of finishing.

The bridge is grounded through the bridge pickup. I'll have to check the other Tele, but I think I ran a ground wire to the back of both pots. I don't think it would hurt to do the same on this one. I think my real issue may be the capacitor. I will check in with Martian.

One other thing, the push-pull splits the coil in the down position and is humbucking in the up or pulled position, I thought it would be the reverse. Either way thanks for the kind words and the help.

D'oh! (Andy smacks forehead)

My bad. To switch the coil tap. Move the ground wire on the push/pull switch to the spare terminal above the humbucker wires. That will split the bucker when you pull the switch.

Breif post, using iPhone

Andy
