Picked up a 1 piece Ash Tele body this evening. I plan to make a Sherwood Green Tele to match my Strat. I'm going to try and do a better job documenting this build and capture all of the steps involved.

I'm looking to go with a humbucker in the neck. I'm also probably going with an aged white pick-guard, traditional Fender style bridge with compensated brass barrel saddles, chrome hardware, and chrome knobs with pearl tops. To keep a 60s vibe, I'll be using a maple neck with rosewood fretboard.

I could use a good wiring diagram for a Tele with a humbucker in the neck position. I was even thinking of setting it up as coil-splitting. If anyone could point me in the direction of a wiring diagram that fits this description, I sure would appreciate it. I also could use ideas on what type of pots to use.

Thanks for looking and feel free to share your ideas!

Here are pics of the body:

LOVE IT! The body looks mighty fine. And that pup is the whip.

This one's gonna be good!

Kong, Extra beers in the box, looking foward to a new tele build. A bit off topic, but take a look at Offsetguitars.com. Go to the Dressing Room tab,
there you can change color, pick guard, hardware, bound, not bound neck and so on.
Just the thing to fan G.A.S. flames.

Cheers,
John.E

It's from GFS. I linked to it below:

I'm going with white pearl, not gold-pearl as pictured.

At least there's no major woodworking to be done! Can't wait to see the pair together! How will you wait the 30 days for the lacquer to cure AGAIN?! :D I don't know if I can handle it LOL

BoK,
I guess we all are hoping that the Fall line up and the Football season will give us something to do when "It's Drying Time Again"

Cheers,

I was thinking of doing one sometime too.
I want to try and do something like this
Image

I like the binding, but I really want a tele with a contoured body. So I've been looking for one routed for 3 pickups and contoured. Xhefri has one on Ebay, but I want a different finish.

Jason,

That is really a nice guitar. Love the chrome against the pearloid against the blue and the binding really pulls it all together. Really nice, I'd love to see a project like that!

Ah-Ha!

Well it didn't take long for you to start another build then! Hooked are we? :D

Theres lots of ways to wire up the humbucker with a coil tap. if you let me know what switching options you'd like I'll se if I can post up a diagram for you. My personal preference would be to have a DPDT switch inbetween the Tone and Vol posts for coils spliting the HB but I draw up what ever you want to go with

Hope this helps and i'm looking forward to this progressing!

Andy

Edit: Oooh, and I realy like your Sig Banner!

Andy - thanks. I'll do some research to figure out just what type of switching I want to go with. Is is common to coil tap a humbucker in the neck position? I figured it will give me a lot of tone options.

Hi Kong!

I have no idea how common it is, but it will (IMO) give you some extra options.

To give you some food for thought, heres some Coil/Split tap options.

Using a push/pull pot you can split the coil without altering the look of a tele and you can chose which side of the HB you split.

Or if your not bothered about an extra switch you can use a mini toggle or latching push switch to achieve the same effect.

One more option would be to use a DTDT on/off/on switch so you'll have the option of the HB in series and the choice of either coils on their own. Giving you three sounds from one switch.

Heres a link for info on coil taping a HB which may also help.

Andy

Edit: Whoops! Forgot the link! http://www.smitspickups.com/coiltapping.htm
