Right, I am a Tele n00b.

I would love to have one, but would like peoples opinion as to which may suit me best. I would like a rosewood board, and hot (ish) pickups. I am not too fussed about the 3 saddle bridge (ok, flame away!).

I like the idea of the Nashville Tele, as it is still in Strat territory. I am quite happy with the idea of just two pickups, as long as they are hot enough to rock out in a somewhat heavy manner. Think a little harder than Zep, and you will be in the right ball park.

Thanks!

If you want hot pickups try anything that has a twisted tele pickup.

As far as what suits you best, it depends on what your playing style is, or what you hope to play. To me, any Tele is a good Tele...just go to a store, if possible, and see which Tele "speaks to you", then go from there. Just try as many Tele variations you can, and you'll find the right one.

I like the pickups on the nashville tele. Tex Mex pickups are suited for very heavy music as well as light country stuff and everything in between. Can't stand that pickguard, so I changed it. I got the nashville power tele with the 2 color sunburst finish. I love it. Good pickup combonation. Get what suits YOUR feel though. I used reviews to find what I want and that worked great for me, but seriously, these experts know what they're talking about. So good luck.

As far as finding a good tele goes, just find one in the store that plays well, then swap out the pickups for better ones. I found a mexican tele and put a seymour duncan little '59 in the bridge and a quarter pounder in the neck. The little '59 is a humbucker in a singlecoil space and the quarter pounder is a high output singlecoil, they both rock pretty hard. I wouldn't trade my tele for anything in the world.

I think all teles are great but clearly some are better than others. I have an american deluxe ash in blonde. Not really my favorite color but it is "correct" and this thing could be pink-it would still smoke. The body is very dense and it feels substantial but still not back-breaker heavy like some LP's I've played. It has the standard 2 pickup arragement but w/ the S1 system which allows some pickup blending ala the in-between-settings on the strat. The tones are usually additive though unlike the strat which seems to "split" the tone-they are ususally my favorite strat settings at that. Maybe this S1 puts the pickups in parallel vs series or something-I don't know all the electronic stuff behind it all. What I do know is the guitar can sound meaner than my PRS singel cut which is loaded w/some serious humbuckers. I really think it has a lot to do w/ the simplicity of the guitar and the ash body/ maple neck. These woods really let the notes sing and sustain and I've come to favor maple finger boards over rosewood though that is pure opinion and clearly means little. That being said, I don't know if getting a mex tele and loading it w/ hotter pickups is really the answer. I think you can produce a great sounding ax that way but you can't expect the same woods and quality even though they used to laugh at the japanese products-now the world is realizing they made (and still do) some superior instruments. Also, you would be paying for stock pickups which will find their way into the corner of your case-forever. I think a lower priced (maybe even used?) american tele is a better way to go. An upgrade from there will be a real force to reckon with and strong on all fronts-not just the pickup end. I played the "hot rod" tele w/ a mini SD humbucker in the neck (like another post stated) and I loved that one too but they are not cheap! This is part of the fun-it's the chase and search for just the right ax and there is no right or wrong-it's a tele and is there anything better than that?

use any Tele, an powerful amp, a lot of gain and drop down the tone and the $@!& should sound pretty awful.
my guitar sounds like a disaster if I'm not playing on clean :s
