I recently purchased a 1989 E9****** and cannot figure out the color. Its a dark metalic blue with shades/hints of green. But more blue than green for sure. Name? Color chart? Any help? Thanks, Cj

Compare it to the color chart here: http://www.fender.com/support/colorchart.php#

But some colors from the 80's have been discontinued, or it could have faded over time. Can you post a pic?

Just a guess, but it could be Gunmetal Blue, which was an '80s color - although there's not much green in that to my eye. It's more of a metallic blue with a hint of grey.

I have a Fender bass in that color but all the pictures I have of it aren't color-accurate. This Strat I found on the web looks about right:

YOU NAILED IT!Thats the exact color. So, "gun metal blue"! Cool! So, that was a custom color? The serial # on the neck denotes an 89.....but the neck pocket on the body is a 90. Thanks again! Cj

Wow. Well, miracles will happen.

No, it wasn't a custom color. Both MIA and MIJ guitars and basses had it for a few years at least. Fender used the name Gunmetal Blue again in the early or mid 2000s with the MIM Satin Stratocaster Standards. Those had black pickguards and a low-gloss finish, but it wasn't really the same color in my opinion.

For a while in the late '90s I played my '80s Gunmetal Blue MIJ bass in a band with a guy who had an '80s MIJ Strat in the same color. They matched perfectly - rosewood fingerboards and white pickguards. We thought were were pretty cool.

This looks like the MIM Satin Standard Stratocaster:

Of course, when you search for Gunmetal Blue Fender, you're going to get some stuff like this, too... :D
