Just a quick history. I played in garage bands after high school for little bit short of a decade. At the time I played a lot of guitars and ended up a tele man, for the most part. I remember playing a Deluxe model back then and I was in love. But at the time it was a lot of money and I never had one. I did have two Standard teles at separate occaisions. I don't remember why that was but I had one that was like a lipstick light reddish with a white pickgaurd and one that was black to yellow fade with a white pickgaurd. I remember liking the later better, but to be honest, I don't remember where they were made from. I think they were both mexican made. But like I said, I don't remember.

Anyways, here's my questions:

1. If I was to pick up a deluxe tele, is there a way to bypass the pick up selecting switch and just use the knobs? I am more of a rhythm guitarist and quite frequently my strum pattern will be kind of long and it may hit it.

2. And oh yeah, are the new reissues decent quality? I don't know where they're made, I just see them for sale on some websites for like $750. Am I better off looking for an older one?

3. I am looking for a clean sound, for the most part. Something that sounds good with strumming and more of a natural sound. Is the Deluxe suited for that? Or am I better off with a standard? Or a thinline?

4. And finally, I played an American made Standard yesterday at a store and liked it very much. However, I noticed that the individual strings were less pronounced comparitively to the strat I played. I was playing them through a Fender amp just clean. What I mean is: say I was playing a G chord, and hammered the fifth string from b to a and then back again, it was kind of lost in the sound of the strum. Is that a function of the pick up not being set up properly? Or is this kind of normal. I don't remember. Or is this because it's a single coil? It was one of them normal looking chrome ones.

You can flip the controls and put the selector switch on the bottom.

I'm not sure what you mean by "flip the controls". Are you saying the top can be clear of things and the selector switch can be repositioned to the bottom. I don't want any buttons up top. Or anywhere near where I strum. Which is over the neck pick up and sometimes forward of that.

You can reverse the plate, putting the selector switch on the bottom, with the volume knob on top, tone in the middle, or vice versa. This way the switch is out of the way. This may or may not suit your needs. This frees up the volume knob and gets the switch out of the way. It's a pretty common mod.

I think you are describing a standard set up. I was referring the the deluxe switch on the top of the guitar.

Aha - you're talking about the RI Telecaster Deluxe, not the American Deluxe Tele. These have the toggle switch in the same spot as a Les Paul and have individual volumes and tones.

I suspect you could find a schematic somewhere for removing the toggle switch and just controlling the pickups from the volumes. You might try to find some info on modding Les Pauls like this.

The current models are made in Fender's Mexico plant.

I'm surprised that you didn't get the similar string clarity with the Tele that you had with a Strat.

Yeah, I think the RI stands for "ReIssue"? Yeah the 72. I played an original one once and was in love and it was too much money for me at the time.

Anyways, thanks for the info. As far as the sound on the tele at the store, I didn't think to look at the depth of the pick up. That might've had something to do with it, eh? Next time I go to a guitar store, I'll bring a screwdriver to see if I can raise it. If they let me.
