This is a question for a guitar tech maybe, but I recently replaced the machine heads on my 1983 squier tele and for some reason the action is way off, neck was just set too so I can't understand how this happened. Is there something I can do before bringing it to the shop?

Hey, there could be several reasons for this, one could be that the lack of having strings on the guitar has caused the neck to back bow, meaning your action will be off. To check this, press down on the first and last fret. At the twelth fret the string should have just a bit of room between it and the fingerboard. If not, the neck is back bowed and you need to adjust the truss rod until there is a small space, just a few mm. Another reason could be that the bridge saddles have slipped, in which case you should probably have it set up by a pro. Also, you will find in many cases that fitting new parts can cause small changes, it may even be the gauge of string or the way they are wound onto the tuning peg.

ok, this makes sense, I have actually noticed after a couple hours that the action has raised on its own, there is still a bit of fret buzz, especially on some of the higher strings. I'll do some truss rod adjusting and get back to the forum.
