I'm fairly new to this.. I bought a Japanese tele with a bigsby on e-bay. I like the guitar, but the fretboard is different from what I am used to. I have 2 epiphones, and the fretboards are totally flat. The fretboard on the tele is "arched". I'm sure there is a proper name for this, but I don't know what it is. What I would like to know is if there is another style of neck that I can drop in that has a "flat" fretboard. I find these easier to play.

Thanks..

Most necks are not truly flat but have an "arch". This is usually refered to as the radius. Smaller radius necks have more "arch" and larger radius necks are flatter. Sounds like you are used to a neck with a bigger radius. I'm not sure what is available as far as replacement necks go, but you should be able to find one with a larger radius. Replacement necks I have seen start at about $125 and go up from there. Unless it is a genuine Fender neck, you will not be able to have the Fender logo on it as that would be a trademark infringement.
My Tele neck feels very different from a Strat neck, and WAY different from my PRS. It took a while to get used to but after playing it I have found that there are things I really like about it. So before you shell out any bucks for a new neck, give it a chance, and see if you start to appreciate it for what it has to offer. Just my 2 cents. :D

Thanks...

The guitar is a 60's custom tele with a "C" type neck and a 7.25" radius (According to the Fender specs). Is that what one would call a short radius??

Thanks

Yeah, 7.25" is a tight radius. I find that I prefer a much flatter neck for jazz, maybe 12" or so. I have the same (7.25) neck on my Tele and it was a really weird feeling when I first got it last year. The neck is also about a millimeter or 2 thinner in width than I was used to, so that threw me off, too. The more I play it the better I like it, though it is not my favorite neck shape. I do get some pretty good sounds out of it, but I don't use is for jazz, mostly rock and blues.

Check out this site for some really expert advice: http://guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi

Great. Thanks for the advice. Epiphone does not post specs as well as fender, but as far as I can tell, my dot and firebird have radai over 10", which would explain a lot.

So the next question... Does fender make tele necks with a wider radius??

Fender make necks with a 'wider or large' radius but they come with
the guitar
My Baja Tele has a 10'' radius.
Maybe a replacement neck is the option, like Warmoth.

The Warmoth compound radius neck has my eye.
I'm thinking of one for my 50's tele that starts at 12" and works it's way up to something like 9.5"

The logic is that you get the "flatness" where you feel it most (up top) and the "roundess" where it helps most (for chording down lower).

Might even go for stainless steel frets.
